Looks like a Giant Puffball to me mate, good eating by all accounts and looks in perfect condition, just make sure its all white mate with no yellow or gills on the inside when you cut it open(it should be solid white flesh inside) and you got yourself a feast there.

Terry, stick this years growth that you cut down in a bucket of water and within a couple of months they will have roots and you can plant them up in the spring and they may even bare fruit as they will be second year growth then.

The ones I planted through the cardboard I managed to get up roots and all then I had lots of dead root with no growth this year they seemed dead. I had put them on the fire heap but I will lob them in water and see Allan  . Would save a few pennies if I could get a few going

Parmesan Puffballs

Serves 4 as an appetizer

Hope Miller is the coauthor of the book Mushrooms in Color . This is one of her favorite recipes.

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup flour
  • About 1 pound puffballs, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch slices
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten with 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 4 tablespoons butter or more if needed
  • 2 tablespoons oil or more if needed

Mix the salt with the flour. Dip the mushroom slices in the flour, then in the egg, and last, in the cheese. Melt the butter and oil in a sauté pan or skillet and sauté the mushrooms slowly until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Serve at once.

--Hope Miller

I have read up on a few ways to cook it as you say fry in butter grill steam in soups etc. i might try the recipe above. i hope i wont be poisoned.
