Tiercel 6,986
If its not one thing its another, fecking winds given them a right kicking. Welcome to gardening, if it's not carrot fly then its cabbage root fly, and if the cabbages get away from that it's the bloody cabbage whites. And if you manage to stop all those the bloody slugs get them. Never ending. TC

TC Thats about right what ever I plant if I read up on whats its most prone too thats what I will get and it says don't plant the same family there again for years to come so it won't be long on my two plots I won't be able to plant any thing for years Saying that even with club root I found this year starting in pots and get a big root ball going then big handful of lime in the hole they did ok. But if you try and grow from seed in that spot forget it
darbo 4,776
i had a plot with clubroot on many years ago terry apart from what you do. a old bloke told me to make up a bucket of water lime and compost mix it so it like a sludge like consistensy and dip the root of the new plant in it and make a bigger hole than the root ball and fill with compost always grew decent cabbages etc i have old pics of the first plot i will put them on if i find them. terryd 8,552
Thanks for the tip John some thing else to try
Tiercel 6,986
Even though my plot had club root I never suffered with it. A squirt of fairy in the hole when planting up was all it took. A chap on the allotments gave me the tip, he got it from a RHS gardener on a question and answer session at a show. Apparently they are not 100% sure how it works, but it is believed that the club root spores absorb the fairy and the liquid makes them grow till they explode. It also works for swedes when sowing the seeds put a squirt of fairy along the sowing scrape. TC
terryd 8,552
Fairy well thats some thing else to try handy to know. My sweet corn is still up right after the winds so that was good to see. Sheltered by my runner bean wall. Been picking black berries last few nights too good for a nice tart. Won't be bothering with jam got enough jam done at the moment. Noticed a change in the weather this week bit of a chill in the mornings autumn not far away now
