Tiercel 6,986
I love this thread, no bravado, no bull sh!t just good old straight talking. And an empathy for each other, as we have all been there, and done that. The thing I really love is when some one can grow something that you can't, no jealousy or pique, just well done. No ego's on this thread, only people who are willing to help. TC
gnipper 6,466
I truly aspire to be able to grow like you lot fair play cracking stuff !! What you have grown this year looks spot on. Cheers John, we've really enjoyed it fair play and thats the most gratifying part imo, the kids been right into it !! It's good doing things the kids can help with like this isn't it. My kids loved the strawberries and if these tom's hurry up they will be going the same way. My eldest will eat fruit and veg rather than sweets and the baby is going the same way. Anyone else's kids love raw pepper?

terryd 8,411
Good way to get the kids to eat fruit and veg. My middle daughter is all ways asking for dam chips but yesterday I think she cooked 3 lots of runners and just a bit of butter which is good to see. They will all sit there shelling peas as well but I have to expect some losses
terryd 8,411
Had to laugh this morning the wife did shopping list yesterday and said do we need carrots. I said nah I got that covered down the plot today then scrapped around a couple and saw nice bit of girth. Though right better get the fork don't want to snap them in half and leave 6 inches in the ground or do my back in heaving them out. Pushed it in too the hilt and levered the soil lose the dam things fell over I was laughing my head off Told the wife they are ornamental ones but still got enough for dinner Picked the first aztec broccoli today to try with the roast tomorrow few random pics hope the parsnips do better than the carrots That method of covering the carrots in cardboard to germinate worked by the way John
gnipper 6,466
How long do tomatoes take to go red? These things are taking the piss now?
Tiercel 6,986
How long do tomatoes take to go red? These things are taking the piss now You can try defoliating the plant, that usually helps. Other than that stick some bananas or kiwi fruit by them that will help, but it also kills any flowers you still have on the plant. Bananas and kiwi fruit give of ethylene which helps fruit to ripen. gnipper 6,466
I've snapped out the leaders now so they should concentrate on the fruits now shouldn't they or should I pull leaves off?
Tiercel 6,986
Cut the leaves off close to the stem, so that all you have left is the main stalk and the trusses with the fruit on. There is a good article about it here. Edited to add: Your not on your own this year, I know of quite a few people that are complaining of the same thing. Sorry John meant to message you yes it was very nice. Good texture great colour and tasted good. Wouldn't say it tasted like spinach or a broccoli some where in the middle had a taste of its own. But if you like either of them two you would like it. So from me Edited August 10, 2014 by terryd
