picked a few butternut squash to make soup with. the sprouts are coming on good. had a great crop of victoria plums. still 1 plant with blueberries on.a fig tree with a few on. still getting a few strawberrys.there are rats round the chicken sheds catch a few each week in the fenn traps.

What bait do you use darbo?

I was going to cage trap then shoot with the air rifle,but might get some fenns instead.

i am only a novice trapper but i set the traps around the sheds were there are runs along the sheds and going under. i enclose the traps with anything to hand plywood etc. i have caught quite a few with no bait but i have also sprinkled mixed corn around and under the fenns and caught. i used chocolate but unfortunatly caught a few hedgehogs which i was not happy about. read through the trapping section on here for tips. although i have had double figures in a few weeks as i said i have a lot to learn myself.

I know chocolates good for mice in buildings.

I can see where it chewed through the chicken wire boundary fence and there's a short run to the shed,then buy the shed is pile fresh droppings,still wet looking,

Then there's small pile of earth coming out from under the front of the shed,and a couple tunnels into the chicken run,that's alongside the shed

ive recently had a rat problem around my veg beds and chicken pens , ive used a few baits on fenn traps , with varying sucess .I used strawberry jam at the weekend and fek me its deadly . i caught 3 in 1 go . ive got a pic on my phone but i cant resize it . later on i had another 2 in fenn trap and 6 in the live trap.

i can say its the best bait ive tryed.

Still going strong planted out some durham early today

 

King cabbage are looking very king cabbage

 

leeks seem to have rust but from what I read I might get away with just letting them grow through it hopefully

 

 

I like these lettuce they are called black seeded simpson and seem very hardy

 

 

Then on plot no 2 still not sure if I need to prune these currants

I just emptied out a bag of red duke of York and a bag of duke of York last night , the shaws have been off them for ages but we had plenty to eat so i left them in the bag on the garden and there still fine . ive another three types in bags but im going to get some tomato boxes and lift them and store them in the garage before the frosts come

Must be nice having your own supply of spuds I am going to buy 3 bags at the weekend. But next year I plan to get a good crop in. My sprouts seem to be blowing they are staked but I have read a lack of goodness is the ground can also cause it. I plan to spread plenty of manure and compost over the winter so hopefully next year the ground will be better. Hopefully they will taste ok blown or not

Get a ph level soil tester terry you can pick one up for a couple of quid.Brassicas grow best in a soil with a reading of approx 6.0.If it is low add a dressing of lime approx 6 weeks before planting out. Also F1 seeds seem less prone to blow.very handy these testers you can test before and bring up/down the acid/.alkali levels to suit what you are planting on a particular part of the plot.

Funny you should say that darbo I bought one last week the one with probes you stick in the soil rather than the chemical testing ones. It gave a reading of 7.5 on both my plots so I thought this is odd and tested my mates plot who seems to grow enormous every thing and that was 7 too. So I thought it cant be working and whacked it in my compost heap which said 4 so it must be ok. I think my first plot is just lacking in goodness so I plan to get plenty of manure in then adjust with lime if needed as you say.

My second plot on the other has been well maintained so hopefully that will be good to go
