darbo 4,774
never tried it darbo, is it hard to grow?, whats it taste like ?? I looked at asparagus as a investment crop bootsha.you dont harvest it properly till its 3rd year but a good bed can last up to 20 years. i made a raised bed just for the crop.Bought 1 year old crowns from a garden centre. the first year dont harvest. the 2nd year just harvest for the first 2 weeks or so. the 3rd year you should be harvesting for 6-8 weeksThe spears just keep coming.Keep the bed well weeded.Usually start to emerge mid april this year they have only just started. After the cropping period let them grow on they will look like tall ferns when they go brown usually autumn cut down to ground level. You can boil/steam/roast/bbq/stir fry them. hard to describe how they taste i can only say they have their own unique flavour i love the taste.
spade 224
Really enjoying this thread and seeing some great plots both big and small. I've been sorting out my veggie patch at home having neglected it for two last 2 years. Got 3 varieties of toms in greenhouse, an old bath with carrot parsnip and radishes, 3 rows of spuds (2nd early and main crop) beetroot, peas, courgette, sweetcorn, sprouts, cabbage and broccoli. I've also got a few rows of salad leaves. Fruit wise I've got raspberries, gooseberries, Black and red currants and rhubarb. I'm very much looking forward to enjoying some home grown produce.

Jamie William Dammes 6
Morning all. Obviously I'm new here but thought this thread should be my first port of call - my allotment is just about in order this year (only took it on Easter 2012, so had plenty of clearing to do last year before I could get anything in). My spuds are just about all showing through, the broad beans are flowering (as are strawberries). Peas are maybe a foot tall (Champion of England, which will grow to 8 or 9 foot ). Parsnips onions turnips and beets are also doing ok. Just waiting for the weather to improve a little at night before I put my beans and sweetcorn out (started at home in pots). From (almost) one end to t'other: (From the camera: turnips, beetroot, parsnips x2, peas, onions and shallots, swiss chard, potatoes x3, strawbs, garlic, onions. My plot ends at the white sign. To the left are compost bins, rhubarb and raspberry canes. Out of shot (left and behind) are broad beans and the area where sweetcorn and french beans will go). low plains drifter 10,415
Smart little plot that squire, you must have put some graft into it in the short time you've been there, must feel a bit seasick after walking up and down that path a few times though
Jamie William Dammes 6
It is a little wonky, isn't it! Only one or two slabs that rock though when you walk on them. We're gradually shoring a few up - we can do without anyone falling over and blaming my plot or my neighbour's It was used before by someone who had three full plots side-by-side and grew to sell on the markets. My plot was taken up entirely by rotten cabbages stood in a sea of weeds when I took it on. The stink from the compost heap when I'd cleared that lot was incredible!
