sussex 5,777
Had a good one yesterday ,took Hutchey out for a morning and he got his 1st deer ,he was made up, but needed to get back on the does at another place this morning,so was up and ready for the off at 6,i5. Its only 15 min away so was there glassing up the top field at 6.30.They have an old stone grannery that was converted into 4 high end offices that looks out over a small carpark to a field that drops away down to a lake, great views, the field is a deer magnet ,tree lined on both sides with the lake at the bottom. The farmer needed me to be a little discrete when shooting this field , he did'nt want the girls in the offices upset by seeing bambi get shot, so i look at that field way before anyones about. Its quite handy really the deer are used to people walking around the building ,so i just walked slowly round the side to the main door layed down on the yorkstone path and picked out an old long faced doe from a line of grazing deer, none of which even looked up,till the old girl hit the deck, then they were gone. Checked , bled ,i moved back down the track to a overgrown orchard, the wind in my favour i glassed the field 2does & buck fawn were walking slowly between the rows of trees stopping to pick at odd bits of foilage ,seemingly going nowhere in particular,as they got to the row i was looking down a little cough and they stopped, the lead doe collapsed, the other doe & fawn took flight but stopped another 70 m down the row looking back at the doe twitching on the ground ,the cross hairs on her shoulder, the buck fawn behind saved her..Checked the doe ,back for the quad and pick up 1st one before the girls get in,to work, her loaded it was pick up at the orchard and down to the bottom wood to gralloch.that done i went back to the motor for a well earned coffee.9.20 am Coffee break over it was back to work ! The next 4 hours passed by in mixture cock ups by me,and others, mine was to get out of stalking mode, it was a fabulous morning weather wise and i was watching a group of long tailed tits flitting from one tree to another and bumped half a dozen deer laying down in the bracken, head now back in gear,i worked my way along the top of the valley and sat down to glass up the bank down to the tree line 150 m away.Sometimes you just know something will come your way & 30 min later there was movment directly below me ,the deer were on the move, unfortunatly so was the old boy who does the logging, between me and the tree line is a track on which the old boy was bumping along on what im sure was gods tractor left over from when he created the earth....i wonderd down ,did'nt think you were over today, dont worry about me i wont get in your way......... Round 3....back to the long field ,glassed that 30deer , the only way was a route march right round the boundry through the woods at the bottom then back up to the bottom of long field , this took nearly an hour by the time i crawled through the ditch(waterfilled) and up to the set aside strip around the field to see the deer laying down in the middle of the field,so far so good , they were at 255m not so good,as i watched them 70m to my left a single doe emerged , i must have come right by her on my way through the wood (good stalking) She paused looked at the others and before she started over to them she dropped on the spot ,No 3 checked out took the short way back for the quad, driving back i took a quick look at the back of the lake were the farmer said he always sees deer , i've looked, but never see anything , as i came up the bank from the lake, over the brow of the field 50 m in front of me stood 3 deer, the rifle is round my neck, they stood looking as i slowly lifted it clear opened the bipod ,jacked a round in ,aimed and fired ,2 run away the other one did'nt Lucky i know but every one needs a little now and then.......Gralloched,cleaned out it was back to pick up no3 her taken care of i arrived home after dark , all washed out ,taged and in the chiller.cold beer time...out again in morning same place,i want to finish the does by mid feb if i can .........................Now tuesday morning......going nowhere i.ve pulled my back out ,can just about walk, of to the osteo for me ,sod it ... Art 20
Congratulations Hutchey! Sussex, I need you to pop over to the states next season and teach me how to stalk proper. You sure can slip up on them it sounds. Great write up! By the way, Sealskinz gave me a fair rate on shipping to the states. Hoping someone has me a pair ordered for my birthday or Father's Day. Mentioned it to my wife. If not I'll order myself a pair. Quote Link to post
