Gaz_1989 9,539
Just got myself a decent bike and been taking my bitch alot the canal path. Just to improve fitness and stamina. Been doing 10-12 mile at a pretty slow pace, it's a good trot for her. What pace would be best? Fast walk? Trot? Gallop? Obviously sometimes she varies the pace herself, if she stops for a piss then she runs to catch up etc. Video below gives some idea... http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n639/gaz_daniel/AEDEAA5E-8E07-45F0-B77E-0E6375727251-178-0000000D1ED02CAA_zps2ed7f989.mp4

Tiny 7 1,694
You dont have to do them sort of miles GD. 4/5mile would be enough steady pace with a few sprints But at this time of yr you souldnt really need too be fitting her up (unless shes been lame?) . Work work and work this time of yr and a few days of decent rest IMO would be better for her than 10/12 miles on the bike... Its Feb she should be fit as a flea
romany52 313
That pace is just right mate.

Lamp a few rabbits here and there. Run the odd daytime rabbit. Until a bloke off here took me out and put some game in front of her. She was fooked. Proper let me down. I know it's the wrong time to be getting her fit but I will keep it up through the summer and keep mooching about and then by September she will be ready for what he's got to show us :-)

I know you know the importance of decent grub. So come july step it up and by Sept she should be ready for it and throw her at as much as you can and decent rest souldnt go far wrong........
Gaz_1989 9,539
Ok nice one mate. Will drop it down to 6 mile. She's getting hammered with work. Out mooching across a quarry yesterday for couple hours, bike today, lamping tomorrow, bike Wednesday, prob just a 20 min walk Thursday, lamping Friday, mooching Saturday and then coursing daytime rabbits Sunday. She's being fed decent grub mate no worries there.
Gaz_1989 9,539
You mentioned rest a few times. How many days off a week when grafting hard?
gnasher16 30,492
Look at how a dog works in the field its not a constant pace.......a dog will be flat out one minute then walking the next...................thats how you need to condition your dog a constant 7/8mph trot for 12 miles is pointless you could do 30 miles like that it wont get your dog fit for work........................a short sharp 4 or 5 miles going up and down the rev range will bring the fitness you want not a long slow constant trot.
Gaz_1989 9,539
She gets that when we are mooching the moors or the quarry. Walking, trotting, sprinting etc. This is in addition.
socks 32,253
You won't get a dog to optimum fitness by just biking at a constant speed ... The heart and lungs soon learn to get into a rhythm and the dog just mossies .along happily for miles ... Obviously it's better than doing nothing ... But you would get far quicker results from some fartleck training a few times a week and some sprint work ... Utilising both of these training methods will work both the fast twitch and slow twitch muscle fibres plus hear and lungs ........

Well she obviously isn't getting enough as in your own words she let you down ... Ease off the bike and mate and follow the good advice ...
