Good Quality Strong Dog

Recommended Posts

Five years after.... Aged ten/eleven Rio is in light training for his return to WP, He wont be competing but more a testimonial pull, I'll be happy for an empty cart pull and a round of applauds from Enthusiasts alike. His return to the track is in support of Weight pull Internationally. And our way of showing an old boy in good health after a sporting life.

Heres a write up written by the President of the United pulling federation on Rio's debut season.

Hey, thanks lads, he pulled 1850lb later that year 3 times, he had peaked by then and had give his all to please, so he retired from the track and Sired a minnie bitch.

I'll find some pics of him in his day, he was strong fast and agile, A credit to his breed and certainly a credit to his family.

God bless Dougie

I feed Raw meat when in training and comp including raw chicken wings daily (perfect bone/meat/fat ratio) offle once weekly and fish weekly, raw Eggs seasonaly, I add a few bits and bobs to the diet and feed a bit of Bone and Veg/fruit liquidized with probiotic yoguarts/Bannanas. for extra energy before workout.

Training for the dogs is very different from day to day, one day they could be road running (attatched to my scooter) now thats fun, trust me.

Other days consist of drag pulling, A freight harness attatched to a Sledge and we walk up to 3 miles with the dogs body weight being pulled, warming up on a spring pole and warming down with a bit of ball work.

Then we run them on Lure machines over the farm (Rio once beat a little bitsa over 100m) I was thrilled that day as he brought the Fur back to my hand, I think two fingers went up to me mucker in an instant lol.

Then we use A frames and agility apperatus on other days going as high as 8 ft, Flirt poles are used on these days.

If theres anything I can do to help bud just give me a shout, we have a few meet ups in the Midlands in the summer you could tag along and take a look.

Theres lots of clubs now all over the country who encourage sporting events for Bullbreeds, giving a working breed a new lease of life and the end result is a much calmer, more confident dog on the end of a lead. Little staffords can be taught to do amazing things my friend.

You do all that training for a dog to drag a weight 20 yards :icon_eek: ................Each to their own and all that and im sure its a lot of fun.....but these competitions always put me in mind of fat middle aged tattooed bald men with egos as big as their bellies !.........I would find it an absolute insult to spend weeks putting top condition on a dog only to tie it to a heavy weight and say " right now drag it along " !

No offense to you Bulldog like i say im sure its a lot of fun.....but to take it all serious and competetive.

Your bang on with that opinion Gnash and your so close to the truth. The competition side of it means nothing to me what so ever, albeit its nice to work towards titles and recognition. I enjoy my Staffords and they are out and out Athletes, so to leave them sat in front of a door to keep the draft out would be far more insulting.

All my training is fun, the only time my dogs know there working is when there hooked up to a cart, the bond gained over this short training session is priceless, When a dog gives 100% to please you and to serve you, its quite special. They feel humble afterwards and proud of themselves for pleasing you. They dont see weight pulling as a sport, to them its work, no different to a drey horse.

It helps me to asses my dogs weakness and strengths Gnash and Records on running/sprinting etc are kept for later generations.

I train my dogs High jump, long jump, sprint, twisting, lifting, obedience, swimming, climbing and it keeps them very fit, its my beleif that a Fit dog is a healthy dog and with the growing anti dog lobby of bullbreeds in particular its good to keep them healthy of mind in public. It saddens me to see understimulated working breeds and with todays laws, this is the only way for me.

No offence taken Gnash, I wont be promoting my dogs as the new world beaters and there only competition is to better themselves and there personal bests, I have little interest in what other pullers etc are doing as this is a personal thing between myself and my pack. We work hard play hard and share big hugs.

Its funny because when im out riding my scooter in the summer I get old women coming to there driveways to see us pass by :) often clapping with encouragment. But if im correct even this is against the law, not that the local police realise as they are often neck bending as I pass them.

FUN FUN FUN!!!!

I can see the point of these athletic events high jump, agility or the flirt pole thing where they go over an a frame theres logic in that as it requires a fit dog of sound construction..............but this weight pulling where folk build their dogs up for ages specifically for that......i went to one of those Ed Reid shows ( the first and last time i went ) about 15 years ago a friend of a friend had spent ages getting a dog in shape, good strict feeding and exercise........we got there the dog pulled a cart along 4 or 5 times and that was it we went home again !......It wasnt difficult to see the types it attracted plenty of dogs conditioned up to the eyeballs owners standing around talking bollocks and moaning about the kc show brigade while waiting to be handed a pretty rossette !!!....................Little men with big ego,s i came away wanting to throw up :D

Theres no better form of bonding than man and dog conditioning themself together towards a peak............its something i really miss truth be told......good luck to you and make the most of it mate

Thanks for that mate, what do you do for training in terms of the other activities like high jump/long jump? I share the same opinion as you and gnasher and I am not interested in competitions, more just looking for an activity he sees as a game that can burn some energy. When he was taken to the rescue he looked like he was on steroids (from what i was told, I didn't see him then) and the more muscle he has lost the faster he has been, which to be honest I prefer an agile dog to a bulky one for what we do day-to-day. But all I know is that he was never walked and kept on a treadmill, but he gets 3-4 hours of running around the hills everyday with me and has changed shape so I really don't know what they did with him.

He loves to hang off branches but he has managed to chip a bit off a tooth doing it so I have stopped him doing it, so I would like to make a a tough leather pad I can hang from a tree instead, do you have any advice on how most people do this other than just stitching some leather together?

Here's a few pics of him
