I take it this is purely a lurcher, worker to worker question........

 

where do you start,, for instance Joe down the road has got his 1st cross bull/grey (it works) you got a first cross bull grey it too works, would you breed them... and why ???

 

 

I've got an ex track greyhound, done alright at the track, never seen a wabbit... not exceptional but sound in structure, health, mind etc...

 

Old farmer Jack got a Collie, seen a few sheep, does his day to day chores... never seen a wabbit..... again not exceptional but sound in structure, health, mind etc...

 

you're buying a pup, no pick of the litter, you get what you're given... you need to catch rabbits and possibly the odd fox, which do you chose ??

i know what i would chose but its personal choice but ideally you need to know what was in the make up of the sire and the dam unless the pups come from someone you trust you need to know cause puppy pedlers will tell you anything ive bought from a known source were i know the breeding and they have been repeat breedings that have come good i bred my dog a few times only to bitches that are good and i know there backgrounds

and they were all good workers and threw true too type ? is this what you are saying ?

I suppose it depends on how you define worker, one man might think his dogs the bees knees another man might think it's crap. Your man Hancock takes a lot of flak some might say deservedly but I've seen a lot of decent dogs out of his kennel, I've also seen a lot of mediocre dogs bred from two supposedly excellent workers. There are a lot more factors involved IE the owner, the ground, the amount the dog gets out, how its entered . One thing I have noticed over the years though its always the dog that's a duffer not the owner.

my take on it... worker to worker, line bred, cull hard, then after a few generations hopefully you will have a line that does the business............. in a perfect world... (if it were as easy as that then we'd be breeding racing greyhounds and racehorses)

 

I wouldn't buy a pup if it were from two first crosses just because they worked..... all sorts of reasons why...

 

I'd have a bash at 1st cross, hybrid vigour and all that... bull, collie, terrier, whatever

no mate sorry missed you out saw his post first wasn,t aimed at you just in general people blame dog instead of themseves yes unless you are buying a garenteed dog of someone you know thats up and going no pup is 100% to do the job you want but you have a better chance of a good one from tried tested stock thats produceing time and time again

agree with that mate ive stated before weve only bred to dogs we know the origins of,but just out crossed the first of our line which was the best one so far to an english sprint greyhound which has never been tried on any quarry but was a well known racer the 3 dogs were put with sound people to see how they come along and the best one will beput across the line bred grandaughter out of his father also which are all 1/2 1/2 to produce 5/8 3/8 it gets a bit confusing i know

swansea jack im a fan of the bull x they really do suit me for what little ive done with them.

sorry mate, that wasn't the question, not getting into bull/x versus collie/x, I was on about 1st cross as opposed to worker to worker...
