What would you have done Micky?

not what he did.

You must be one of those Internet hunter pricks, who knows all but knows nothing :censored::censored: How can you be so judgemental without knowing the facts? What makes you such an expert? I have read alot of smudgers posts and regard him as a knowledgeable ferreter who only has the welfare of his ferrets at heart!!! And you have the nerve to come on here and slag him off.... How f*****g dare you!! It's knobs like you with remarks like that which create problems for all of the hunting fraternity. I suggest you piss off and go and stick on your Watch With Mother DVD!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. I apologise if my rant has offended any one other than Prickey

i have read the facts ,and you, must have too,so ,that makes two of you who know f**k all about ferrets, dopey

So you have read the facts have you????? Lets go over them so your pea brained know it all, know nothing head can understand.... The guy fed his ferrets fresh rabbit at night (this is because it is cooler and so the meat wont go off or get fly blown so quick) to his healthy jills and 12 week old kits and in the morning he went to remove the carcass and found the kits dead. Where on earth can you deduct that this guy doent know how to look after his ferrets???? I dont know if you have a crystal ball or just talk crystal bollocks

i dont know it all, but i do know how to look after ferrets, and if i am talking bollocks ,i am talking to the right person

Found this morning that my litter of sandy kits (4) were dead and partially eaten by my Jill mum.

WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED. :cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

The Jill and her sister were the only adults in the court.

Left them last night with a gutted rabbit, all seemed fine, this is the Jills second litter.

F%%cking Gutted, what could I have done wrong. :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash: This has never happened before sorry really pissed.

Micky,

I would like to know where I have gone wrong, I have had ferrets for a number of years and had some success with litters in the past.

Please,I'm interested to learn how I could have got it so wrong.

I am sure all those who keep ferrets are awaiting with bated breath for your comments.

he obviously has nothing of any value to say and is just a messier if he wasn't he would of shared his infinite knowledge by now !!!

in my opinion this happens sometimes i have a Jill who had a litter last year and she ate 3 out of 9 kits i think she did this as they were the weakest and it gave the others a better chance i think she felt she couldn't cope with them all. this year she had 9 again and they have all survived i think it is down to experience on the mothers part. but i do agree the death rate seems to be high this year! but what are we comparing it to may be we should run a poll and see who had kits die this year and a separate one for last year ? to get more of an idea of the amount of kits that die.! i don't feel that every person who has had a ferret die would post about it death for fear of pricks like Micky adding their useless comments!

:clapper: Well said Ferret15: I know I'm not exactly in this debate as I haven't had a litter this year, but I can honesly say that in 20 years of keeping ferrets I've never had a jill eat her kits, unless she ate a couple at birth that I didn't know about. We did have a litter one year that had a few swimmers which had to be put down but that is the only problem we've ever had and our jills kittle togther, live together all year round and there's never a cross word among them. Though of course they are either related or have lived with eachother since kittenhood. LOL

My OH who has kept ferrets since he was knee high to a whatsit said that only on a couple of occasions has he had young die on him, and has also never had jills kill their kits that he knew about, in other words more than a week old.

This year's ferreticide is obviously happening to other experienced ferret keepers and the idea of atmospheric conditions may well prove to be more than a rumour.

Let's hear of last year and maybe the year before to compare behavioural abnormalities or anything that may shed light on the subject. How about a poll: I don't know how to do one but I'm sure there's someone who is interested that does!

If people know in their hearts that they are doing right by their ferrets then they should feel no shame or guilt at things going wrong sometimes: it happens, its nature, and its only by being open and honest and curious that we advance our knowledge.

Let the judgemental pricks refrain from further posts: as has been said before: if you haven't got something constructive to say then keep silent!

Thanks for all the positive comments. I have just come off the telephone to an old boy I know who has had ferrets for well over 50 years. I explained what had happened to my kits and explain in full what I had done with feeding etc. It would appear that I have not done anything that I should not have, my routine did not change nor the feed.

After a lenghty discussed I mentioned that my chickens and ducks were being taken by a local vixen, my old friend suggested that this could be the possible cause of the jill killing her kits. He explained that if a Jill with youngsters feels threatened she could given the right circumstances react by killing her own if she become stressed, especially if the problem is persistentand over a reasonable period. Have any of you out there heard this. ?

Mickey, still waiting for your comments old chum. :bye:

Sorry to hear about the sad loss of kits.

@Mickey, I'm about to get some ferrets for the first time and would like to start off on the right foot. Could I also please have some pearls of your infinite wisdom?

Oh, and thanks Mickey. It is people like you who really do make learning such a pleasure. I feel comfortable being able to ask questions on this board in an effort to better understand the animal I am to look after, without in any way feeling that someone will be judgemental or harsh.

I know I am :D

As I said earlier in this post I apologise if my language offended any other people but it really gets my back up when people can judge someone without knowing the facts. I have just had 2 more litters out of my jills and right or wrong I start handling them from 3 or 4 days old and in one of the litters I noticed a couple of very small and weak kits. The mother ate them because one day they were there and the next day they were gone. As with all animal life it is survival of the fittest. Like it or hate it and no matter how upsetting it can be, that's just the way it is.

you went wrong by keeping two adults in the cage with the kits ,sometimes you get away with it but more often ,than not you dont. there may be a clue has to what happened, when you said [you gave them a gutted rabbit] ferrets need the lot especially after giving birth
