Full blown PS is hundreds of quid unless you pirate it, but as a good start photoshop elements is a good start and will do most things you need to do to adjust lighting, contrast, hue/saturation etc and sharpening.

If you want to start using layers or make composite layers and images then the full edition gives you more.

Not a lot of difference in price with where you buy them from but amazon sometimes do good bundles and offers when a newer version is about to come out.

Take a look at Lightroom as well, or ask Kay about it, I think she uses it to good effect.

Hope this helps and I am sure you will get loads of advice on this one.

I guess it depends what you want to do with your photos, if its just stuff like cropping, and contrast & some of the simpler things like turning to monocrome then freeware like these are a good starting point

http://download-photoscape-free.com/

http://www.gimp.org/

out of the three I use photoscape more than the others

I do have paintshop photo & adobe lightroom , which I use on odd occasions , adobe elements is a decent one for applying filters over photos , but I didnt buy after the trial ran out on that one & its no doubt been superseded by a newer variation now anyway , but its still worth looking at , not sure on the price of lightroom or elemnts to be honest

This is another handy one to have , its run of your browser so you need to be connected to the net to use it , PHOTOBUCKET use this as there editing facility

Finally downloaded all the components from this link. http://www.adobe.com...oads/index.html So I now have a free photo shop. Thanks to Paulus and secretagentmole. You Barstewards it is driving me crazy   It is all in gobbldygoog, It takes me hours just to find a button.

It has just taken me a good hour and a half to work this out.

"

Select the Rectangle tool.

Select the Rectangle tool from the toolbox and then click the Shape Layers icon in the options bar. Now, the Rectangle tool creates a vector shape on a new layer. (Adjacent options let you create a path or a rasterized shape on the current layer.)"

It took me nearly 5 hours to create this. Now please dont all take the "P" at the same time.

Then when I knew where I was going about 5 minutes to create this.

I am now trying to add shaped layers to these and my head has nearly exploded with stuff, I have no clue where it is or what it is called.
