Wrong Dog Wrong Ground

Recommended Posts

I guess this is a follow on from the one dog or a pack thread........iv had a couple of year break for one reason or another...iv bought a suluki.whip.grey pup that's 10 month old now..iv rung round and got most of my ground back..I foned a farm that always held vast numbers of rabbits we used to take atleast 50 each week..spoke to the farmer and he said very few rabbits on but over run with foxs..so I choose the Mali to have a wonder round with (and rifle) ...got there it was like water ship down..the fields were alive almost a carpet of rabbits.the Mali had a few runs but was out classed on the short grass.....so after having a good walk and a propper wrecky I left for home..arrived home washed the dogs feet in salt water gave her a good massage and penned her up..feeling a little disheartened with my poor choice of dog thought I'd take the pup for his first ever lamping session to another farm...got there with the soul aim of finding some tight squatters so the pup could have a taste of his working future...we walked 250 acres and all the rabbits which were very few were to long or close in to slip a young dog on.....what I did see was 6 foxs which appeared to be tame and not give to fecks that o was walking round infact one followed us for two or three fields within 70 yards....no Mali (rifle) just a pup ...what ever I saw the pup followed the beam and stood up on his back legs when he saw anything in the beam even rabbits a couple of hundred yards away...he got no slips..........

It doesn't make much sense to me having 2 completely different dogs and only taking one.

If / when I get to the point of having a fast dog for fast stuff and a big dog for retrieving big stuff I would be taking both everywhere.

You can guarantee whichever one you take you won't see suitable game for. Sod's law I think.

im sure that's always the case mate with having a pup, its a waiting game im sure in time your saluki cross maybe able to retrieve what you've shot. its like anything else you cant take a terrier to young to ground or you'll ruin it. so give it a little time and you might have an alrounder
