Hi guys,

I thought this would be the best place to ask about training my whippet pup. She is 12 weeks old at the moment. I understand that she should not be introduced to live quarry until 12 months old, but what sort of training should I do with her in the mean time? I have never trained a coursing dog before, and would greatly appreciate all the help I can get. I would hate to do things wrong and spoil her.

Thanks,

James

Thanks Simoman, anyone else got anything to add? :signthankspin:

if your planning on doing any ferreting i think it's a good idea to get your pup used to ferrets from the word go :victory:

Hi James take your time teach her to come to call retrieve & socialise her break her to ferrets once she is retrieving throw her dummy up the garden path in the dark shine a tourch on her dummy so it is lit up & encourage her to go down the tourch beam & retrieve the dummy you can start all this from now good luck

Thanks for the advice Jeff :signthankspin: . Should I wrap the dummy in a pelt, or does this come later?

A pelt would be good but when i teach mine i use different types of dummy some fur some feather some big some small as she grows use a tennis ball rubber ring a variation it all helps later in life.

A good strong recall is the basis of training. First of all you need to concerntrate on getting a good bond with your pup, so that when you call its name it comes running. Once youve got this bond you can build the rest of the pups training on this as retreiving and general obedience work require a good recall to be established first so that the pup and you both trust each other. Always start your training off somewhere quiet where the pup can concerntrate on what its being taught, and there are few distractions so it learns the lesson quickly. Once its doing well you can move on to busier places where there are distractions and the pup can be tested to see how well it has picked up the lessons. If you feel at any point the pup has gone back a step, then go back to the previous lesson and begin again from there, keep lessons short and simple and always end on a good note
