shaaark 10,878
I know its hard sometime in ireland with small fields. But on good open land if a hare gets up at your feet would u give it a bit of a start . Said it before and I'll say it again, I wouldn't give anything an inch, it's not sport or testing your dog or whatever, it's HUNTING, and the quicker your dog can catch something the better. And whilst I can appreciate coursing dogs etc, I can also see where antis etc get alot of their ammunition from. The sooner people stop calling hunting 'sport' the better 1 Quote Link to post
baw 4,360
t .answer to the above 30 yards 300 yards the dog gets slipped. Just like everybody else .dont listen to the bullshit on here. They all slip. Ain't that the truth Quote Link to post
whippet 99 2,613
october last year some were still the size of rabbits......................we put it down too the bad weather................... any body who calls there selfs a sportsman will let there quarry have fair law................love to see the hares about ,.......but it dont take long before some morons with dogs to catch on and run everything..............and they keep going back until nothing is left ............... no time for these idiots.............long may the hare run......... went beating the other day and me mate is good friends with the keeper and there was loads of big rabbits and said we can have a bash as long as were sensible ............happy days Quote Link to post
baw 4,360
I'd love to live in the ideal world some on here do. A wee sonter along big flat land, old hare gets up 20 yards away, wee duck of its ear to salute its adversary..... Dog spots it right away, all tense, me counting out the yardage as the hare runs to the centre of nothingness........keeper, police just standing admiring..... Yes it must be f*****g great. Unfortunately, I live in the real world. A world where you could walk for an hour before you see a hare, up and down hills that make you breath through your arse.... Sleet horizontal.. Finally see one just as it breaks to cover. You walk on hoping its came out the other side.... Yes it has, 30 yards away and gaining fast to that large Forrest of pine..... That's when I think to myself, what was it whippet99 said about real dogmen giving them law..... Ohh aye, 30,40,50,60,70 4 Quote Link to post

Ohh aye, 30,40,50,60,70 if were realistic about it ...........when out walking the dogs one can get up any where at any time of the year...............and it happens and theres nothing we can do to prevent such cases but i think they deserve respect..........and given a fair chance........i havent done alot day time but i just like the sporting chance on open ground......... ive walked up on deer on a real ruff night only a stone throw a way but i never slipped the dog pre ban whats the point they would hit before it even looked up.......... i havent done enough with hares to really make any honest opionions but im just saying everything deserves fair law ...............depends what odds are in favour of......... im no saint but i do have morals..........i suppose fair law too each is different............ i understand exactly what your saying baw....... baw 4,360
Yea mate, it was just the real dogmen tag that irked me lol. I totally understand what your saying and I too like to respect the quarry. I wouldn't take a hare from its form if the dogs on the lead etc. but 100 yard slips just ain't practical. If a hares in a tight field 20 yards away and running, cover is yards away, I pretty much think in that situation 20 yards is fair law. You wait any longer and it's gone. Yes you could chose not to run it but f**k that, we can't be choosy in this game I'm afraid. I always ok most of the time lol let the hare get its stride before the dogs slipped and to be honest, most hares are more in the 200 yards away bracket than the 20 2 Quote Link to post
