Scallywag 78
I've noticed people mentioning 'common land' for hunting for hunting on when you don't have permission anywhere.....I was under the impression that every square inch of land in Engalnd and Wales (don't know about Scotland) was owned by someone and that you had to have permission to hunt on it. Have I got this wrong? Apologies if this is a stupid question.
Guest DALE_2
any land is * open* permisson , i dont have an answer to your question , but its so hard to get permisson these days , people who have it have most likely took it from someone they knew and went on with , or have had it for years , for instance we went out on friday at 9am , we drove all way along the A66 motorway in the middle of no where which is bout 2 hours away from were we live , we was out all day till around 6pm , and came home with 1 positive , which was come back when the feilds are short , which is all we wanted anyway , a few took phone numbers and said they will contact us , and the occaisonly * F word* appereard . never mind , Dale
Scallywag 78
Having looked at this again I think this might be one of those really daft newby questions I suppose what I'm trying to check out is, is there any true common land in England or Wales now, or is it all owned by someone who has to give me permission if I want to go and intentionally hunt on it? Simoman 110
a few took phone numbers and said they will contact us , and the occaisonly * F word* appereard You'll never get permission speaking to landowners like that Scallywag, does common land come under local authority ownership? Scallywag 78
Simoman, I think you're right, in which case permission's pretty unlikely to say the least Sometimes I feel like moving!
skycat 6,174
ALL land is owned by someone: part the common land round my way is owned by a big Angling Club, though very few members of the public would know that (if it weren't for the bloody great signs saying so! LOL) Other so called common land can be owned by a nearby town, or its council, some can be held in socage (originally a feudal type of tenure) to the crown for example. So even if you think no one owns a piece of land you can be sure that there is an owner somewhere: a town council, the crown or other organisations. I lost valuable permission when a local council tenant on whose land I hunted got a nasty letter from the council. In theory he should have been allowed to use any legal methods to control his foxes, but the council were anti dogs, and he was worried they could have evicted him if he continued to allow dogs on this land for that purpose. This was many years before the ban incidently. We've also gained permission on council land (ferreting a cemetary!) so it depends a lot on the individual council or owners. Thanks. Sometimes I can hardly stand the lack of freedom I'm inexperienced and live in the middle of sheep farming land with not a foot of arable anywhere. Maybe I could get permission on the allotments or something

Scallywag 78
That's interesting juckler, I wonder if that's the sort of thing I've heard about then. I don't want to work my dogs as such - apart from anything, my dogs are rescues and it's a condition not to work them. But I do like to go out and try for one for the pot, one for the dogs' breakfast, without running into trouble....
