b53hunt 15
hi all just a quick question do any of you have a shotgun with a barrel/barrels shorter than 24 inches and what was the reason you used when applying for a variation for one ? i was thinking of putting in a variation with shooting fallen stock in as a reason thanks for replies in advanced Quote Link to post
tegater 789
Why don't you just put down the reason you actually want one for. Not being funny but surely that's the easy way. Quote Link to post
b53hunt 15
well i was talking to a fella the other day who claimed to have a coach gun with short barrels but then i was told it came under a section 5 prohibited weapon is this correct Quote Link to post
tegater 789
I can't quite remember now, but in the back of my head I am thinking short barrels become section 1, but short overall length becomes section 5. I might be wrong though, I would have to look it up. Quote Link to post
b53hunt 15
do you know the minimum overall length of a shotgun and i already have a section 1 shotgun 8+1 and i want a shorter barrel for that cheers Quote Link to post
tegater 789
I think it is 40" but I may be wrong with this one. Sportingshooter will know. I know usually the barrel length has to be greater than 24, and that may still be the same with sec 1. Quote Link to post
b53hunt 15
thanks for your help bud Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
I think it is 40" but I may be wrong with this one. Sportingshooter will know. I know usually the barrel length has to be greater than 24, and that may still be the same with sec 1. My ears were burning You're right though mate, overall length of 40" which is specific for self-loading or pump action shotguns. This 40" does not include any movable or detachable part of the stock, in other words the stock has to be the permanent/fixed stock the gun would normally be fitted with and measured from the start of the wood on the butt to the end of the barrel, not including the butt plate, if any. So in theory, say you had a 14.5" stock and a 9" action, you could have a 16.5" barrel. Which is very short indeed. A coach gun, if I remember correctly, roughly had 12 or 14" barrels with either only the pistol grip or a very short stock. Bearing in mind the short action on a S/S, I can't see a true coach gun being anything other than S.5. I'd be very careful of applying for a type of gun just because you want one. Ultimately, if you have a good reason, then you'll be granted what you need. Fallen stock is something which can more than justify the grant and use of a pistol, however, this reason would need some sort of proof to your FEO that you are required to do this task on a regular basis or as part of your profession. Guest Leveller
I've got one with 10" barrels for "humane killing of animals" and "vermin control" Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
How is that classified on your FAC then Leveller? I would assume it's a S.5 Pistol given the length of the barrels. Quote Link to post
Guest Leveller
Yes it's a .410 shot pistol on fac Quote Link to post
