mjr88 50
Hi As my interest in Airgun shooting has recently been rekindled, i was just wondering which of the 2 above magazines are the best to read. Many years ago when the great John Darling was writing articles, i was an avid follower ( I cant remember which magazine he wrote for though) I am now thinking of taking out a subscription for one of the above magazines, and would appreciate you comments to which is the overall best mag, Atb John Quote Link to post
BazB 37
i had a subscription to airgunner for a year and to be honest mate as a hunter i found it pretty useless and more geared towards target shooting and antique rifles. there was some hunting related but not enough for me. hope this helps ATB Baz Quote Link to post
webster 90
i find both a bit crap . if you believe what they write theirs no such thing as a bad gun nowadays they tell you all the good points but leave out the bad bits , it the stoeger x20 or as i prefer too call them the devils work they say the gun is great but if you shoot one the trigger is shit and the twang was mental . another one was the bsa tactical . i have one and the reviews were fantastic they failed to mention the trigger pull which was a piss take . its fine now but it took a good polish to sort it . i just wish they gave the hole picture Quote Link to post
Sam H 80
Id go for Airgun Shooter mate a decent magazine in my opinion. Airgunners definitely the worst. Quote Link to post
Tribeboy1970 9
I would agree, both were good magazines in times past but these days crap, airgun shooter is the best of the three in my opinion ! Quote Link to post
Mawders 595
Both are crap! I call them comics! Internet and THL is better for grasping how good something is or reading a hunting foray and its free! Quote Link to post
andyfr1968 772
You'll never get an honest review from a magazine, they're too frightened of losing advertising revenue if they piss someone off by telling the truth about how utterly shite some of their products are. As for hunting articles, I'd agree with the above comments about Airgun Shooter from what I've seen. 3 Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,587
John Darling wrote for Airgun World at a time where his personal views and honest opinions,- the result of his actual experiences, made him a great example to follow and emulate. He wrote about air rifle hunting as it was experienced by him and his Weihrauch HW35E and later HW80K .22. He didn't go mooching off with some other rifle to write bullshit about. Just good honest facts about how to hunt rabbits and pigeons around his farmland shoots with his trusted rifles through the change of the seasons. That always made a great read. There was a couple of lads who followed JD for a brief spell, one who had a BSA Goldstar and the other was a lad called Carl who actually had JD's HW80! They wrote in similar fashion of going out with what they owned and seeing what they could bag with it and how. They've long since vanished now. Sadly, the real-life hunting tales of one man and his beloved hunting air rifle are a thing of the past. Today, it's all about the advertising revenues. So the editors will not publish articles or reviews where a negative opinion is espoused; lest the manufacturer in question gets offended, withdraws his account and puts his advert dosh elsewhere. I actually saw a recent article where a certain writer had his past-views of an SMK rifle rewritten to make it sound better than the pile of shite he clearly thought it was before. It ran something like; "This month George ********* gives the SMK WTF another chance to see what it can do on a hunting trip ...and the result is a pleasant change of heart and mind!" Terry Doe had actually asked him to re-write a review of this piece of shit air gun he had previously slated in an earlier article, and come up with a more favourable opinion in this new one. It was clear to me SMK had really taken offence at this earlier article and must have threatened to withdraw what must be a sizeable account budget for advertising with the mag. What I read here now, was the words of a man who was trying his best to sanitise his honest opinion to a neutral one in compromise; without actually saying anything that could be construed as anything that was remarkably good about the rifle in question. Nor was there anything bad about it. Pathetic. That's why I never bother with any of them now. Getting an honest opinion from Nigel Allen on some other pile of cheap Turkish/Chinese crap is like reading up on turd polishing! Pianoman Edited January 29, 2013 by pianoman Quote Link to post
gurtwurz 792
Save your money mate, youre better off on the forums for getting any kind of honesty regarding rifles, kit, clothes or actual techniques for hunting (with the exception of Ian Barnett, who's probably the closest thing to a modern John Darling) To be honest, the guys on here write better articles on hunting, and theres a wealth of knowledge on all the different sites and its all free.. Cheers, wurz Quote Link to post

salop sniper 32
Personally am one who does subscribe to a Magizine and my choice is Airgun World. I preffer Phil Hardmans articals over Eddie Jone`s from airgunner. I am a hunter mainly with occasional fun plinking and once or twice in a year get over to a HFT course for some light hearted fun and have found the Airgun world the most suited to me. The forums are great but not so viable for reading when on a car or train journey or for kicking your feet up with a brew to browse on a work time lunch break. I can currently acess most forums at work but have just lost access to one (PW) and am sure the others arnt far behind so that will leave be back with my trusted magizines as i wont be straining my eyes over my phone ! And I also rate the freebee jack-pyke flask i get on each annual renual ! ATB Quote Link to post
mjr88 50
Thanks for the replies lads. I've never read Airgun Shooter, so i might try a couple of issues just to see how it goes, John Quote Link to post
fxshooter 18
I read them both...... in W H Smith, then put them back on the shelf and save myself the four quid they both cost. Save your money mate, they are both full of advertising hype for the latest rifle, jacket, scope etc, etc. You will get better honest advice on here. Atb. Russ Quote Link to post
