brassneck 128
They are all pretty much the same. agree with that pretty much , some of the fancy stuff ie feathered feet etc can be tricky to keep clean , game fowl tend to fight early on , with bantys you can keep more in the same space or less in a smaller space , depends what your after , eggs , table birds or just wanting to keep chickens , myself i just enjoy seeing chickens .. well being chickens , sort of relaxing lol theres loads of breeds nowadays and plenty of info on net , on here , books etc . atb phil
johnpop 3
I keep a few chickens my self down the allotment and would like to keep my self going with fresh birds instead of having to buy them. Maybe start selling a few to cover feed costs once I got the know how
Lab 10,979
If your worried about chick crumb being to big for chicks( cant see it as pheasants are smaller and they manage fine) then get a bag of super fine crumb. Either that in the numbers you are taking about you could give the standard crumb a whisk with a food processor. Id go with corrugated paper first then add your savings when the birds are feeding away fine...(after a couple of days).
Millet 4,497
News paper can be worse than shaving, never had a problem with shavings, but had bow legged chicks on news paper as it can be slippy. I start out with n old towel for the first week, then straight to shavings. One of those cheap indoor rabbit cages, about 1.5 foot by 2.5 foot with heat lamp does for about 12 chicks untill feathered then an out door moveable run, and back in at night for a couple of weeks, then in with the rest of the birds Easier in spring than winter. I did start of using towel's with the quail but they are a pain to keep clean..the best thing i found was rubber car mat's the square one's for the back footwell's..you can take them out blast them with the hose pipe dry them and stick them back in..plenty of grip also to help stop splayed leg's..
