George Kinloch 16
Hello, I know this may get people that say they are crap and to get a long dog but I'm just mainly looking for information and the experiances of people who own a good ferreting terrier and to see how they have trained them and how they work? George Kinloch 16
Cheers for the advice. Does your terrier hold the rabbits that have bolted in to the long/purse nets? Atb George Quote Link to post
pmatty77 26
Yer, only prob is she dont wanna let go and she did end up in the longnet herself one day Quote Link to post
patterdalejoel 669
my beddy whip is a bit hard mouthed and shakes the odd big rabbit that squirms, i guess thats the terrier in her Quote Link to post
pmatty77 26
Yes thats another point terriers more hard mouthed than lurchers who unless a rat or something have had them tend to be soft mouthed Quote Link to post
George Kinloch 16
strong minded terriers what next?!?! Lol Do you find you have a problem with ur terrier trying to go to ground? Cos I have a friend who regularly looses he patt x Lakeland down holes. Quote Link to post
pmatty77 26
She not bad with rabbit holes, but a fox hole is a different story, but thats what terriers do basically go to ground, why not get a whippet or whippet/beddy....terriers are bred for foxes so down the hole they go Quote Link to post
terryd 8,424
Terriers make great ferreting dogs as they will hunt the rabbits up in thick cover and put them too ground and mark. They can obviously due to there size get in any cover unlike a lurcher. If you miss a rabbit with the nets when it bolts they will just put it too ground again or a good one will any way. It might not be so keen to bolt second time round but it is efficient. My only concern in this day and age would be badgers as they seem to be every where now a days Edited January 28, 2013 by terryd Quote Link to post
George Kinloch 16
I would get a beddy/whippet if I had the space but the dog would travel every where with me. So a small dog would be best. It would also be used for ratting. But i haven't completely ruled it out though. How big is ur beddy x whippet? Quote Link to post
pmatty77 26
I not got one but they a medium dog i would say and not thick set or bulky...not a bad all round choice just get them broke to the ferrets when they pups, plus they got the speed not as fast as a lurcher on the straight but pretty good in bush Edited January 28, 2013 by pmatty77 Quote Link to post
The one 8,479
I used to use my terriers before i got the lurcher and once they are broken to ferrets there fine as said the only problem is they might try and go to ground and there no built for coursing any rabbits that slip the nets Quote Link to post
George Kinloch 16
I'm just mainly looking for one to be able to get to the rabbit in the purse net before I do. Nearly all the warrens I do Are hedges and fenced right through. So it's mainly just for getting to the rabbit before i do incase it slips the net. Quote Link to post
