Need A New Dog ?

Hi all,

 

I have a beagle, lovely dog, tried to train him in many ways to recall, dog treats, whistles etc but to no avail.

As soon as he picks up a scent he's off like a train and you don't see him for 20 minutes.

 

Anyway I will be looking for another dog to accompany me on air rifle shooting days and nights for bunnies, pigeons etc.

Oh a quiet dog would be nice, the beagle loves a bark and a howl

What would you recommend?

I don't really use him to tbh, he comes with me just for a walk but he's a pain in the back side, hence why i'm looking for a different dog maybe to retrieve.

Are you looking to buy another dog and what do you want from it pal, the problem with your lad is his nose its always gonna make him run on and look for what he can smell you know ot correct me if i am wrong lads

And how old is your lad worzel ? have you had him out with other dogs or always just alone?

He is 4 years old now, if he's out with other dogs he isn't too bad, but again if he picks up a scent, he's off, mostly fox scents.

I will be looking for another dog to take shooting, one that won't run off.

hi lad sounds like you want something to retrieve your shot game , something like a Labrador ? spaniels will retrieve but these are more of a hunting/flushing breed not much good if your using a rifle though.

You are going to have to make some tough decisions. You have a hound and as a hound he has certain instincts and it sounds like they all work, you don't teach them to hunt they have been doing that for hundreds of years, you have to teach him to hunt what you want, getting another dog is like getting another car, do you want it for off road? To go fast? Look good? When you know what you want a dog to do post and advice for the right dog would come flowing in.

 

But a young dog will learn from your current dog so if he is picking up a line and running off the new dog will follow unless your on the ball with training. So you need to be aware you will have to do a lot of training, with both new and current hope you have the time. But good luck anyway

Basically, when you take your new dog out, you will be best if you leave your old one at home.

If your after a dog just to pick up shot game then a labrador. But if i was you i would probably get myself a small lurcher that way you can use your current dog ??
