FUJI 17,328 Posted January 28, 2013 Report Share Posted January 28, 2013 If you take Millets or Wild Rovers advice then you are giving the dog every chance to nip it in the bud...if it still does it when you feel he's upto chasing again well I fear he's just gonna be a yapper full stop..at the end of the day there is only you that has to contend with it yapping if it continues to do so...can you live with that? Lurcher315 5 Posted January 28, 2013 Author Report Share Posted January 28, 2013 It is saluki, greyhound/collie,whippet, as I said I've not been intentionally running it, I wouldn't run any dog until at least 10 months depending on development, just seen a few unexpected sitters and that started the problem, although she is also a bit of a whiner in the garden too! Especially if she knows she's going a walk, I think it might be an excitement thing just now. Already kept her on a lead the last few days and at times walked her separate, lots of good advice though, thanks! Quote Link to post

WHen likely pressed hard ,or cover woods etc , there will be those that are exciteable and hyper and calm with maturity ,then theres those that yap on ta first rab then afterwards are fine , then theres those that just prior to taking there game will ive out a exciteable yip ty[pe cry . breeding is the essence stable temps , . atb bunnys. You are in charge of the Pup matey if you can't keep it on the lead or work out where she may get a few run's then you are onto a no brainer..she can whine all day long in the garden that will not make any difference or contribute to a yapper.. baw 4,360 Posted January 29, 2013 Report Share Posted January 29, 2013 See when you say she yaps when chasing the other dog, is it more of a bark than a yap? You checked the dog isn't injured, maybe pulled a muscle in the stomach region only noticeable when fully stretched? If its really a yapper and has started yapping chasing anything, can't see it stopping it. It's not like you can keep it on the lead 24/7. If give the dog a good rub down with dog rub, stretching out its legs just to rule injury out. Does it walk with a slight humf back? You need to make sure pups get lots of exercise etc, locked in a kennel can build up frustration and cause them to yap too. 2 Quote Link to post

It isn't injury, she doesn't always do it when running flat out, only when the other dog starts to pull away and she can't keep up. She is well exercised, fit and healthy. Quote Link to post
weasle 1,119 Posted January 29, 2013 Report Share Posted January 29, 2013 what breed is the dog mate??? shouldnt apply to you because pups to young to chase but an old man once told me if it yaps to muzzle it up give it a couple of runs with muzzle then take it off and see if it still yaps, never had this problem so never tried it or know anyone thats tried it any opinions? atb shaun Ive seen greyhounds yap wearing muzzles,plus they do it out of frustration, surely it would be more frustrated if it gets to summit and cannot pick it up. weasle 1,119 Posted January 29, 2013 Report Share Posted January 29, 2013 The pup is still young Longtail so i hazard a guess it can be stopped if it's held back..it may be in it's blood and be a yapper all it's life but they is no harm in holding it back to minimise the chance of it screaming the place down Will a dog yap if it is badly matched with another dog when running, by that i mean if another dog is faster and takes quarry first? as i seem to find thats the pattern i get. i once had a dog get bit pre ban too and it jumped out and yapped ever since. If i wanted a dog to yap i would take it out to young with a faster dog. 1 Quote Link to post
