Lurcher315 5
I have 2 lurchers, one is 19 months old, the other is just 7 months old. The problem i have is the last 3 times ive been out a walk there has been a sitter in a field that was unspotted by me and on all occasions the 7 month old pup has chased it. This has left her yelping whilst chasing on those occasions but she now also yelps when playing with my other lurcher when she cant catch him. Is there anyway i can get her to stop this before it ruins a potentially good dog? 1 Quote Link to post

TUFFTY 1,476
the pup is far to young to be chasing. put a lead on it or you will feck it up. 4 Quote Link to post

Millet 4,497
Keep the pup on the lead when out with the other dog and forget about chasing anything for a few monthes now..just consentrate on some training work..she has obviously been over matched at such a young age..like i said keep her away from bunnies for a while now otherwise it may become a habit that you may never break.. 3 Quote Link to post
Guest long-tail
just out of interest has anyone ever known this to be corrected cheers Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
The pup is still young Longtail so i hazard a guess it can be stopped if it's held back..it may be in it's blood and be a yapper all it's life but they is no harm in holding it back to minimise the chance of it screaming the place down Quote Link to post

Millet 4,497
If it's going to yap they is not much you can do other than hold it back and give it load's of easy kill's imo..if they reach adult hood and still yap they is little you can do from what i have seen..i had one here year's ago that would wine the place down if something got up under foot but was silent if something got up in the distance.. .. i suppose anything will yap eventualy if it's constantly over matched and it's confidence is constantly trashed.. that's why i don't like running them too early..i was border line with the pup i have now but i have nipped it in the bud hopefully and she is silent for good finger's crossed.. ..saying that i have ran a friend's dog's many time's on the lamp and he is totaly silent..but day time on some long distance run's he will yap the place down..and he is 3yr old now..i suppose it's a gamble at the end of the day.. Ben1 3
This can be corrected, i know of many dogs that were started too young and started to yap behind rabbits ect and were corrected. Just keep it on a lead and dont let it see/run anything for a good couple of months. Hope this sorts it ATB Quote Link to post
lamping-lad 160
cant stand a yapper if you dont nip it in the bud now it will do it forever Quote Link to post
wild rover 548
The pup is both physically and mentally imature to be chasing and competing with other lurchers, that is what is making it yap, as others have told you, stop running it, stop all run playing with other dogs, keep it on the lead, exercise it on its own where it cant chase rabbits, leave it for a few months, depending on the breeding it may not be mature to cope with this until its about 12 months old or even more. 4 Quote Link to post
