Great Day With No Deer

Recommended Posts

Have you ever had a day of hunting where you couldn't even get a glimpse of a deer but still really enjoyed your hunting? That was today.

Took my 10 year old son to try for his first deer. We're still having unseasonably warm weather. 43 deg F when we set out this morning and up to 68 this afternoon. Arrived at the property before dawn. Still-hunted for a while from a ground blind on a 200 yard long shooting lane in thick cover but saw nothing. Not even a rabbit or squirrel. Then stalked a while and still saw nothing but enjoyed showing my son the scrapes and rubs and him pointing out every deer track that he came across. Left the woods about 9:30 and took the family to church. Then took my 3 sons bicycling for an hour or so. Then back to the woods with my 10 year old again and back to the ground blind. Promptly fell asleep from lack of rest lately due to so much hunting and staying up late reading on this forum. Napped about 20 minutes then woke up again. My son looked at me and whispered "since you're awake now I'm going to take a little nap". He had his nap and then wanted to do a little more stalking so we finished off the day with that but still saw no deer and only 2 rabbits as we drove out to the property gate.

The deer didn't cooperate but the weather was nice, the sunset was spectacular, and I had the best company in the world all day long. I'm satisfied.

Our season ends on Thursday. I am taking off work tomorrow so that I can take my son again. We'll be headed back to the woods just a few hours from now. Also taking a half day Thursday to get one last hunt that morning. Sure hope he can bag his first deer before it's all over until next fall. We'll have some good memories together even if he doesn't though.

Sounds a nice day art, good luck with your last few outings ...i had a quick look round a small farm i do the deer control for this morning (mon) and had a buck on the quad and back to the truck within 20 min ..just the way it goes sometimes. My last 5 outings in the snow have all drawn a blank..but with the thaw i fancied they would be on the clover and they were..good luck

Took you 15 mins Sussex took me 4 hours. But ended up with the biggest stag fallow I've had so far, I think i started to drag it across the field and got 10 steps and thought Sod this I need help, went to land owner who had a quad, unlike some I don't have one on tap.. Struggled to lift in trailer, and struggled to lift in jeep, even after all contents removed I still struggled to hang it, will post weight tomorrow when it's in game dealer fridge.
