Have you any idea how difficult it is in competitive sport to get to the top and how much effort is required?

Keeps,

Fair play to you in encouraging your children and of course my rant was not aimed at every single kid in the country - rather it was aimed at a stereotype that is representative of the majority.

As for understanding what it takes to get to the top - yes I fully understand. I have played football for Sheffield Boys, Sheffield Wednesday at u16's and got paid to play for Stafford Rangers in the Vauxhall Conference. I am a scratch golfer too and have represented every club I've been a member of.. Also swam for Sheffield for three years as a kid so understand precisely what your son did and you did as a parent. Now I am not boasting about my sporting prowess (well I am I suppose... sorry :icon_redface: ) rather I am making the point that as a child, I was encouraged to excel and try and win, not just by my parent, but also my coaches and teachers too. It's my view that this is not the common practice anymore. For every parent like you who supports their children in their sporting endeavours, there are probably 20 who don't give a toss and are happy to let their sprogs get fatter and watch more TV. And it's certainly the case that school sports in state schools are going down the tubes. Competitive edge is being removed wherever possible and they are now trying to take the word "failure" out of schools alltogether as it makes kids feel less special!! :icon_eek::icon_eek: Fact is - they ARE! We are not all equal.

There are too many people sitting back ready to knock our sports people for their efforts.  They have sacrificed an awful lot to get where they are. They need praise & encouragement all the way, not negativity; something we’re not very good at in this Country as proved by this thread.  Its much easier to knock them.

I can assure you that I am not someone who sits back and is negative about sport. The truth is I love sports - all of them, both watching and playing. I think sport is one of the greatest things in our lives. In fact, I have spent the entire day with my office door closed, listening to England whup the Aussies and have been on my feet cheering all the way! :clapper:

Same for the rugby world cup, same for whenever anyone British starts to achieve.

Anyway, this is all a separate argument to my original post which I stand by - our atheletes are a joke and it's the fault of our attitude to sport these days, plus successive governments who didn't give a toss about our sporting heritage or future!
