The canary with the fringe is a gloster corona the plain headed ones are called gloster consorts and you should only cross the two and not two coronas or two consorts together so i've been told by som

i got a soft spot for glosters, the been in my family longer than me, gutted i got rid, but if im honest i spent a lot of time in with them seein to them when i should have been conditioning me dogs i

The first few birds i got were them with the fluffy wig they kind of appealed to me....but they are boring b*****ds they just stand there.....no song no character......kind of regret getting them now but its part of the learning curve i suppose

Agree with you all looking again at the pic that sure does look like a red factor lads  ,the thing about letting them just get on with it Gnasher is what cock to hen ratio have you as if you don't have enough hens then there will be fighting and the spare cocks will try to drive the nesting hens off there nests to try to breed with them and the hens cocks won't like it one bit.If you have more hens than cocks then you should be fine, also put the nest pans up away from each and you could put a bit of cover around them(bit of conifer or false xmas tree) just for a bit of privacy type thing.Put plenty of nesting stuff in in different places so again there's no squabbling over it and you should be away come spring, made me laugh your comment on taking pics of birds,i bet i take 50 pics for one good one of them and have had plenty of empty perch pics where they've flown off just as you push the button  .

Im only going on the presumption that the ones that dont sing are hens......and on that basis ive got 3 of each..........as regards the pics im glad its not just me then it did cross my mind i had a touch of alzeimers on the way when i looked back at bird pictures with no birds in :D

Thanks for the advice mate.......should be some interesting months ahead and plenty of lessons learned im sure

I think the plainheads might be Fifes. Borders have a similar profile but are much bigger. Irish fancy are similar to Fifes but slightly smaller and more natural....they make great feeders and rearers. And there's a coloured in there too.....

If your not showing them Gnash you want to trim the feather's above the eye's on that corona..a pal of mine had one and it could hardley fly because it could not see properly..after a little trim it had a new lease of life and after being unfit and easily caught it changed to a lively little chap that would fly around the aviary a lot more..which in turn made it fitter and sing more..not that the song was nice but it tryed.. :D

Oh right ok that makes sense it never occurred to me that they might not be able to see where they are going !........I,ll give them a trim up later see if that makes any difference  .........just hope nobody sees me they,ll think ive completely lost it giving a Canary a haircut :D
