Balancing Meat With Complete...

Recommended Posts

I know a few sources say you shouldn't feed meat and complete together for digestive reasons. But I know lots that do with no problem. And it's not really any different to feeding raw meat and pasta or brown bread which I have always done.

I've just switched jobs and working some funny hours so just to make things easier when the Missus feeds the dogs I've got a bag of Gain 28 in to save her messing about with bread and veg and keepers mix etc.

I've just read on the website for gain that if mixing with raw meat you should add an extra source of carbs and vitamins and minerals etc.

I can see why they are saying this because feeding half gain 28 and half chicken mince you are unbalancing the "complete" feed.

But how important is this? Surely it's no different to feeding raw and guessing how much pasta and veg to add? And they are still getting some carbs and vitamins from the gain 28 albeit half the amount.

Cheers

Gaz.

From what I have read and learned over the years, dogs can and do use carbs, but their primary energy source, given the chance, is animal fat. I feed very little carbs at all: a small handful of porr

gain is good stuff and better than redmills imo

I dont think you need to add owt but veg, in my experience with my dog. but if its for your wife crack on.

I mince chicken carcasses for the mutts but im also putting complete dog food and brown bread and any veg etc i can lay my hands on and it works for me but why should gain 28 be any different

I wasn't saying it is mate. Just any complete in general when fed with raw meat.

I feed about 50% raw, some brown pasta or rice and a small handful of Redmills Racer.

1 thing to remember is that Redmills, Gain etc are cheap dog foods and has poor quality ingredients...that's why i like to give raw beef, rabbit etc.

I can't say whether it has made a difference to my Whippet as he's a timid thing and lazes about all day. He's no world beater when working but is keen and does a decent enough job for me

I am no fan of complete and meat personally, for several reasons the most important being digestive rates and the possibility of risking bloat (gastric torsion) in dogs.

But dogs will commonly cope with it but feeding at separate meal times is advisable,I have done this when feeding a wholemeal baked biscuit as a morning meal with an egg or yoghurt and then feeding the main meat/bone and veg meal in the evening.

A raw diet of bones, meat, fat and veg is sufficient when done correctly (its really not hard) and you can adjust this to suit the dog, but each dog is different and if feeding a mixture suits your dog and it looks well on it go for it.

Good luck Sirius

i just feed a mix of minced chicken with the skin bones and fat included, paster with tomatoes and boiled veg along with raw meaty lamb backs 3 times a week, all of this can be prepared in bulk and either refridgerated or frozen in individual portions. far easier to do than people might think.

Why feed anything extra with a "complete" if it is what it says on the tin bag, "complete". One or the other in my opinion.

I don't want to use a complete. I want to feed raw but use the complete to get carbs, vitamins and minerals in there instead of using pasta, bread, veg etc. Just to make it easier for my Missus when I'm working away.
