3 and counting 22
Took to ferts out last weekend for the first time and missed a hole in a bunch (sodds law that was the one a rabbit bolted from) Unfortunately this hole is right under a wire fence, half one side, half the other and the fence is only a couple of inches off the ground and too tight to move either way. I tried to put a net over once I knew it was there in case another bolted but couldn't decide where to peg the net as the hole is vertical for about 18 inches. Any ideas on how to net it or how would you do it? Don't have a longnet as of yet but will be getting one fairly soon as I have permission on an apple orchard, and I don't use a dog (again, yet, but thinking of getting one to use next season) Bri Quote Link to post
fitchet 788
Id use a poke net or bolt cage feller. Bolt cages are very handy to have when ferreting near roadsides and places like release pens. All the best 2 Quote Link to post

3 and counting 22
Ahhhhhhhh, had heard of them but not seen one. Would blocking the hole be an issue? as there are other ways to it from inside. I know it may end with a dig but its not that deep as I followed the fert with the locator after the rabbit bolted and drops to 2ft max. Will try and get a pic of it when I'm back out there over the weekend. Quote Link to post
The one 8,502
If its just a plain wire put your net under the wire and spread it over the hole and what way the rabbit bolts you should net it ,if its a barb wire fence ignore this Quote Link to post
mhopton 807
If we're me I would look for the run witch the rabbits use in and out the hole and set A net it that ways even if it means holding the net up with twigs Quote Link to post

Tiercel 6,986
Do most of the people who reply to these threads actually do any ferreting? A couple of good replies, then replies that even Plummer could not have thought up. TC 2 Quote Link to post

3 and counting 22
Cheers folks, Some good advise and a few options. Will try the hole on the weekend and let you know the outcome. Rabbits out there have never been ferreted so should bolt again, if the little girl remembers how Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
Why not drop the net right down the hole so it is hanging like a curtain across the run underground? Wrap the peg and line a couple of times round the bottom wire of the fence: that way the net fills the tunnel: you can fix it to the sides of the run with a couple of small twigs pushed into the earth if you like: just to hold it in place but they'll come away if a rabbit bashes into the net: works for us anyway and we have a lot of holes like that under stock fencing.
