Nik_B 3,790
Good job its only 'us' that view these threads, if anyone else read this they may get the impression that there are divisions between the branches of fieldsports and that sometimes there is even dis-harmony.......imagine!! Remember lads, divide and conker....... We are all in this together....... I wish we were! Fact is, we aint! Any number of 'sportsman' would throw another to the wolves to save their own skins. That saddens me because I enjoy a fairly broad number of fieldsports. I'd start with fishermen and clay shooters first, then plenty of other shooters can be like that as well. Just go look at the pompous and pious bulls**t on a certain other forum!
R.A.W 1,987
a very interesting thread . it's a bit of a dilemma isn't it. i get it of a lot when I've got a couple of pigs ready to go to slaughter. HOW CAN YOU BE SO CRUEL they ask. I then have to point out that the pigs have been living in there natural environment with lots of windfall treats and plenty of trees to scratch against. when i inform them of the of the life of a danish bacon pig most come around to my way of thinking and the others have there heads so far up there ass , they will never see things from my point of view. In my humble opinion wildlife has the highest standard of welfare. why not harvest it?. instead of rearing animals in alien environments and trying our best to justify the price. don't get me wrong i'm aware we need to produce this way to feed the masses. each time i kill something it's not about ending life but giving life. what i fail to understand is how some veggies drink milk and eat eggs and feel they are all high and mighty. do they not relies that male chickens don't lay eggs or bulls don't produce milk. marshman 7,758
I'm not very good with words and i don't know how i could explain to someone that's never hunted and had that same feeling! How would I explain the only thing I find more beutifull than an hare in a field is a hare in a field with a dog coursing it! The same feeling I got from seeing both athletes run and seeing a chess match played out whoever the winner might be! Hunting is more than one thing and its hard to explain why I do it as I enjoy all seeing all our creatures . I just do , it's a deep feeling and I can't explain it to someone that's not had that same feeling.

How many coursing lads would support a shoots right to shoot hares? The list goes on............... the fieldsports world is fractured!
lanesra 3,994
To me though, the rough shooter or stalker who stalks, waits, hides, sneaks up on his or her prey, will always impress me more than someone who just stands on a peg and shoots at stuff other people and dogs have put up. You can hunt properly with a gun, I just prefer not to as I like watching dogs hunt better. Its the generalisation - we don't like it when we are all portrayed as the type of people who drive over planted crops without permission, leave gates open, etc, its the same with people who shoot. They ain't all the toff type, weekend shooters who turn up, stand at a peg blasting away then feck off home afterwards.. Having grown up around working springer spaniels and rough shooting, I have seen the dedication needed to train a gun dog to a decent standard. I also have two neighbours who are shooters. One has a kennel full of springers and a cocker, a Harris hawk and ferrets, and the other has a springer spaniel and a lurcher in his kennel. Malt most off my best Friends have Spaniels and/or Labs and I know the Dedication these lads and A few Women I know put into there Dogs , my little rant wasn't directed at these type off people as I respect them 100% and value there opinion on the pros and cons off different type off Dog Work , the majority I've found love going out with other types off dog than there own . . . It's the type who turn up have there shooting look down there nose and criticising working dogs as if there inferior to there "sport" !
Nik_B 3,790
Those are probably the same people that look down their noses at beaters and pickers up and probably think they are there for their convenience when they actually turn up to work their dogs or have a laugh. They haven't a clue what fieldsports are all about. I'm lucky to have been brought in to fieldsports in part by a mate who loves working his dog more than a days shooting so it gave me a different perspective. ALso my dad is a big fisherman and he brought me up with his values rather than some of the more crass ones you can see when you go to a stocked lake. It's all about the day out and never about the numbers Anyway I'm doing a good job of derailing a decent thread I have no problems telling people I shoot but usually do it is a veiled way, by educating them on food they are missing out on such as wood pigeon, they then go on to ask where we get it from and I tell them. It's a bit fashionable to be ignorant of hunting/killing but at the same time those same people want organic and free range which is hilarious!!
patterdalejoel 669
one person i talked too recently cant seem to get their head around the fact that if you let every pest animal just run around the countryside many things will suffer, including deer which will overpopulate and end up suffering through disease and lack of food, they simply said, "no grass is everywhere!!" nothing pisses me off more than people that dont know how the countryside works or how people do things, i was fuming at the one show the other week. patterdalejoel 669
but, this same person thought only foxhunting on horseback is illegal, so if everyone like her beleives that, its not all bad!
