Ive had it for years and never really paid it much attention but its the off season of deer hunting and im looking for something to do with myself. what are its specifications and and what does this "ft-lbs" ratio mean? whats the humane range for lets say kill a gray squirrel with it? and how do i clean the barrel, like a regular gun? thanks in advance, phil. Tron 173
Hiya Phil, Sorry I cant comment on the Gamo model you ask about but here in the UK non FAC air weapons are limited to sub 12 ft-lbs energy rated guns you would be better informed on your rifles specifications by googling for the details. there are many excellent air weapon forums in the USA filled with tips about hunting and tuning the dozens of airgun makes available there. In closing any modern air rifle is good enough to kill squirrels provide they are hit in the head or lung/ heart within 25 yards. Good luck. EDIT, II have just googled Gamo 440 hunter review and there is plenty of info and tests of your rifle Phil, one you tube report and tests was showing the USA spec was exceeding 12ft-lbs but not by much. pianoman 3,587
Hi Phil. Just to add to Tron's excellent reply. British Firearms Law stipulates that an air rifle must not exceed a power output of 12 foot pounds at the muzzle. (For an air pistol, the limit is 6 Foot pounds at the muzzle) In other words, a pellet fired from an air rifle in the UK must not exceed this power limit within 12 inches of travel in free air from the end of the muzzle; whereafter, the pellet is expected to slow down and fall to earth.. If it does not, but is found to be more powerful than this, it is classed as a firearm and must be licenced and registered on a UK Firearms Certificate issued by the Police. The penalties for being found in possession of an unlicenced firearm as such here, are very severe, starting with a mandatory five-year jail term if the offence is found serious enough. That's why we are very careful about the power our air rifles produce at the muzzle. Having your rifle confiscated is only the start of your worries! That said though, a lot of air rifles perform brilliantly at 10 to 11.5 ft/lbs energy and refined internal tuning makes a good number of them deadly accurate and a joy to shoot Gamo alas, are not one of the best makes at this level of energy. A lot of imported rifles from Gamo are very cheaply made and do not perform so well. Perhaps the level of Gamo rifle you have is far better than UK export Gamos tend to be. All the best.
