Fishing Kayak

Recommended Posts

Was wondering how many of you use kayaks for sea fishing and if so what you use ie sit on tops or sit ins etc,as i am toying with the idea of modding an old 13 ft slalom viper, just a bit of a project as i like to play a bit in the surf as well as a bit of fishing so this project will be a balance of fast moving, highly manuverable and also stable kayak. The best of both worlds as i am a bit greedy  if the bass aint biteing i can just go surfing

Hi Malcy

Also checkout www.anglersafloat.com as another informative site. I've been a member of this one for a while and picked up some good advice. They have regular meets as well as training days with the RNLI. I bought an eleven foot fishing kayak and probably should of gone for something a bit bigger, however I fish within its limits and prefer to fish in fairly calm conditions anyway. Have launched from places like Chesil beach and Charmouth in the West country. Also being a slightly smaller kayak its easier to handle on my own and I can also fish the rivers comfortably with my five year old son sat between my legs when we drift the river spinning for pike.

cheers for the replies,iv used the old sit in kayak for whitewater river and still water slalom over the years, tested it out in the surf just out side the breakers, primary stability is quite good secondary stable is acceptable, this yak has got a lot of rocker front to back,so far i have opened up the sit in port and removed the spray skirt similar to a sprint design, added front and rear sealed bulk heads tanks, added to the kayak bottom, running from the cockpit to the stern to reduce the rear rocker and to increase the waterline so it tracks better but still has a lot at the front so it wont dig into the waves/breakers and can still turn on the spot.will post pics when i get the project finished (hopefully with a rod in 1 hand and a bass in the other.

Quite an amateur myself but love bay fishing for specks and spanish on my brothers tandem sit on top. Had a little shark making a pest of himself last time but went on his way after I hit him in the head with my paddle. Brother took my son out last May about a mile in Gulf of Mexico and son came back with a 16 lb king mackerel. Never seen him happier. Total strangers were coming down the beach to take his picture with that fish.

Never have to worry will the motor crank if you fish the yak.

Happy fishing!
