wyeman 1,000
Stevie, Don't be in too much of a rush to start formal training the pup, let it enjoy it's puppyhood and see you as it's best friend. You will soon know when the pup is ready for training and then it's a consistent regime of black or white. By that I mean, a command given to a pup must always be obeyed, today, tomorrow and the next day. There can be no relaxation in this rule, otherwise you will end up with an example of a dog that 90% of guns/beaters turn up with at a shoot and then spend the rest of the day making excuses for/apologising/being embarrassed about. A well trained obedient dog is a joy to own and observe, a badly trained dog is a liability. That is why I favour allowing a pup to enjoy it's puppyhood. But do allow it to socialise with other dogs, get it gradually accustomed to loud noises, farm animals and the hustle and bustle of traffic. Have a look at Joe Irving's 'Training Spaniels' & Keith Erlandson's 'The working Springer Spaniel'. Edited January 22, 2013 by wyeman Quote Link to post
