HI Aaron,   Unless SMK have changed the style of the B2 which used to be a break barrel and not a under lever that rifle isn't a B2 and is a DB4 or 5 which was the same as the older SMK Custom Lion

hold up guys...he has the gun, better to warm up with it andsee how it goes. them 4x20's is better than you think for learning on.   it's a long learning curve tbh, starting with crap learns you wha

think with the knowledge you have of the gun you`ve just purchased and knowing the quality of smk products, you may be better off sticking to watching videos of people hunting, there is more to it tha

Thanks for the feed back guys. I took it out today with my friend and we were shooting at plastic bottles and other junk. I only paid £40 for the rifle, scope and some pellets so I expected it to be a very basic set up anyway and I was hitting most of my shots today at about 20 yards pretty accurately I'm going to stick with the rifle for a couple of months to learn and once I get a bit better I can always upgrade and get some other gear as well.

Here's a pic

If anyone could point out a bipod that would fit this gun please let me know. Once again cheers for all your advice, will read over everyones post again later. Going to watch some more hunting videos at the moment.

HI Aaron,

Unless SMK have changed the style of the B2 which used to be a break barrel and not a under lever that rifle isn't a B2 and is a DB4 or 5 which was the same as the older SMK Custom Lion that I used in Bosnia in 1997.

What is written on the action of the rifle mate?

Si.

It says made in china and the numbers y409792 on the wooden part. If anyone could point out a good set up for beginning with like a rifle/mount/scope that is all compatible and not to costly I will start saving. I've skimmed the laws and will go over them in more detail when I plan to go out. Don't worry I'm not going to take it out my back and start shooting cats!!

it's a long learning curve tbh, starting with crap learns you what crap can do, and what you can do with crap, the rest is time in and realisation of craps limits.

when he see's it he'll know, and know wether he's into the sport, from theere its start to looking at better kit.

if the underleaver doesnt have a bear trap mechanismn, i.e. it cant release when cocked the keep hold of it while loading, first rule of thumb is not losing yu thumb beferfore you start.

look from some correct ways and safety vids on you tube, same with break barrels, you keep hold of the broken barrel stock in your arm pit just in case like!! to late when your finger tip or thumb tip gets mashed.. i mean literaly mashed flat.

next is...have a hundred shot day, like fire a load till your bored with it, put it up and have a day off, after that, take 10-30 pellets max out a day, every day..put all the effert you want into sorting the grip and hold etc..bad habits bite yu in the ass later, theyre harder to get rid off than not to have at all. dunt matter what your doing less haiste in the learning the quicker you will learn.

after a few weeks you'll twig with everything then suddenly start to hit what you look at, or you'll see in your mind where the pellets at, how far the guns accurate etc, at that point you can start thinkign to getting a better gun, and then a scope.

a good route to go down is start on open sights near too, get hot with them, because this will set in your mind where the gun is when your holding it.

after that the 4x20's will raise your eye to a little bit higher and put you on the targets you look at, when thats at the hot on stage its time for a 4x40 or some such, a boggo standard no parralex to begin with..this sets your head hight on the gun, and teach's you to get your eye in exactly the same place every time.

then its get a better gun, or if the gun is up to the task get a nice big arsed scope with the danglee's on it.

weekend shooting takes a few years to get to that awsome place, every day shooting, 3-5 years tops you'll hot on, and hearing the others say 'yu cant dooo that' and 'ner ner ner you cant shoot boo hoo cuz i said so' amd words to that affect, problem is you'll know what you can do, and they wont..end of.

get a copy of chairgun, and play with it for a couple weeks or more..you'll suss it, it's good for seeing whats going on.

one step at a time..

airgun mags? heard the exspresion take it with a pinch of salt? take the airgun mags with a huge dollop of salt, theyre selling you over priced kit...looks good, sounds good, costs you to find yup its not that good lol. theyre aimed at the weekend noddies with cash to waiste, they dont actualy want to shoot to the full, just wong some lead off with a loada money gun to show off...

cheers mate. will be out in the back garden most days to practice after I get some more pellets. I keep a hold of that leaver at all times when reloading, don't fancy loosing any fingers. one of the reasons I don't want to go buy a new gun just yet is because I don't think you can buy them online in Scotland which means I need to rely on second hand guns which I just don't know enough about yet to go out and buy one. would it be worth buying a better scope for this rifle already? or should i just get stuck in with this one?

hi mate, welcome to THL!

as ghillies ha said, stick with what youve got for a whle, get used to shooting a cheapo gun as well as poss and you'll be able to shoot a good gun very well when finances allow. i'd stick with the same scope for a bit too, as your rifle doesnt really warrant anything better, just remember to check and tighten all the bolts on your scope and mounts every time you use it and you should be fine for now. a 4x scope will be fine at sub 25yds, in fact i've been using a 4.5x scope at 45yds lately, and i'm hitting 15mm killzones with it so its not an impossible task to use one at all airgun ranges, its just that higher magnification makes it easier. adjustable magnification scopes open up another can of worms concerning different aimpoints at different mags, and you probably want to get out and shoot the damn thing as much as possible without worrying too much about technical stuff(well, at the mo anyway!)

i'd leave live quarry alone for a while though, wait until you can shoot an inch sized group at all ranges before you decide to go on a hunt, as otherwise you'll just be wounding quarry. best practice is to see how far you can shoot an inch grouping at, and then bring your live quarry shooting back 5 yards from that(so if youre shooting 1" at 25yds, only take live stuff at 20yds so theres as little chance of wounding as possible. its all about clean humane killing)

hope this helps, and i hope you enjoy your new found hobby.

cheers, wurz

i used an old 4x40 for 12month to 80 odd yards...had better eyes back then though lol.

the shift up to a 3-9 was a right let down after reading and hearing the regurgitated hype..was just abit more mag was all..

i used a 10-50x66 side wheel for another 12 month, more recently, and tbh..wasnt worth the weight of a house brick for the narmal 5-60 yard...plenking further it comes into its own...but its masif and exspencive lol.

better off getting a heat treated lens scoppe tbh, than a massive objective lens..56mm is the largest i'd contemplate seriously..narmaly.

the reason for 'bigger' scopes is so they mount higher (and let more light in) for a better hold under/over area at a further zerther zero point, i.e. ratting out to the 20yarsd a 4x20 (or opens) is low down on the barrel, so less of a climb on the ret to compansate, a 4x32 with good coatings and glass turns into an all rouder very quickly..the 4x40's, well, better light gathering more in veiw..by the time your ready for the 4x40 plus legaue you'll be loking at your target straight off any ways.

(seems to be the rog way round but when your there you'll see why lol).

chairgun will show you without having to folk out 30..45...150..90 quid..4-500 in trying, thats a nice scope at 500...5 years in its a schmitt n bender or swqrtz or summut, just to realise ahh yeh..could have seen that on a poxy pc program lol.

One thing with shooting experience of this DB4/Lion you have Aaron is, when you try a real quality rifle like an Air Arms or Weihrauch, you will see immediately what a hugely universal difference there is between this and those!

Get practicing with it and a better scope and then move up. And you'll soon be boring every bugger here with tales of you HW80/"Dearly Beloved HW77"/TX200/Prosport as I do!

Best wishes.

Pianoman.

Haha ain't that the truth!

I started on a small cheap Beeman (SMK), followed by a Hatsan 55s. When the masterpiece that is a TX200 entered my world I ended up writing a bloody book!

Been looking at this but it almost looks too good to be true http://www.gunstar.c...e-gs117170.aspx and I've no way of paying for it apart from paypal because I don't fancy getting scammed. My mate has a weihrauch hw 35 that he's going to let me use on his permission and I'm going to try talk him in to buying because he has a webley value max as well that he prefers but I doubt he will want to part with it lol. Learned a bucket load the past couple of days, been reading and watching videos until like 3am since It's my days off.
