Springer Jumping Barbed Wire Fence

Bradford Lad i do the same and lift, It,s not just the barbs i've seen a pointer hanging and screaming with its leg between top to strands ! Took two of use and a coat wraped around the bitey end to get it off.

Cost the owner over £1500 in torn off ligaments op and physio/swimming treatments dog became a pet as not safe to work it as the leg lost side to side stability.

But as others have said thats the point of a Dog to fetch a £1.50 bird why worry about it ? it's only a disposable tool at the end of the day ? is it not :whistling:

guess your right, better leave it at home on the sofa just to be safe cheers

thanks for the replys lads, nice to hear some diffrent opinoins. stoller i like the idea of the coat mite try this next time im out

The coat is only a good idea if your going to be beside the dog when it jumps fences...what happens if your dog is on a runner and it gets to a fence, does it give up or wait 5 mins till you get there with a coat....ATB..

I'd rather not risk it for the sake of a bird like but whatever floats your boat! Another thing you could use is an old feed sack across the top strand...

With a lurcher its a different game it is a hazard of the job, lamping, ferreting is an unpredictable sport and the dogs are travelling at speed i had a bitch hit a hidden reel of abandoned wire it was a nasty incident.

I spent a lot of yesterday lifting my big gun dog over fences he could have jumped them but i wouldnt risk it. At 8 years old he has never been cut or hung up but then again its a slower sport

So what happens when the dog is in a wood and comes across wire? You can hide these things from them but your better off teaching them to jump, it is a hazard either way, it's like when a dog gets caught behind any form of fence, you either leave them which teaches them to find their own way. Or you go back for them which teaches them to wait. This is ok you have to decide what you want your dog to do.

As a tip and I'm sure you all know it but if ever a dog is caught up between 2 strands of wire don't try to untangle grab the front end and throw them back over the fence, dependant on the dog you may get bit but it's a small sacrifice

had both my spaniels hung up on double strand wire, not a pleasant thing dog squealing and dangling upside down, both times i was close enough to get in take the weight [cocker and a very small ESS, thank feck the labs never done it] and get them sorted. not something i'm keen to experience again!

mine will jump for fun, im usually shooting over them so i can choose how and when i send them, plus its mostly over walls so i'm lucky. barbed wire nasty stuff best avoided if you can...not always possible but best to take a few precautions..risk assessment, why send it over the wire for a stone dead bird, now a flighty runner that might be a different call.

each to their own.

Its a springer, if it wants to jump, it will. You wont stop it!

train to do it properly....even then if its a double strand, its always dodgy.

I too have had mine caught up in a double strand by the back leg, didnt get there quick enough and she pulled it free herself.......they are nuts! She was fine, but they are just so driven you wont stop them....
