You fellas arguing about abs ect,,, it's the tyres nowadays ,,, low profile wide for grip in the dry and repelling water,,,, but in the old days they were thinner ,,,this is better in the snow,, mor weight in to a smaller earea

i would of said the wider the better for traction..............in the snow but thinking about it on fresh snow your probably right

Ive just watched a documentry on the big freez 1963. For 35 days the country sufferd ice wind snow on unpresidented scales. Gas ran out water froze. Coal train froze etc. but the nstion got thru it. , this week we had snow flurrys. Bit of ice. And schools closed buses cancelld etc WHAT THE FOOK HAS HAPPEND TO THIS COUNTRY

 

Also if I'm not mistaken,,, I think 1947 was even worse,,,, I remember my grandad on about it,,, with snow up to the top of hedgerows, and being able to find half staved rabbits sat on top of the hedges where they stuck through the snow

ABS, the idea is not to decrease stopping distance but it allows you to steer and so keep control

ABS gives you the ability to steer when the wheels are locked up or sliding in the snow, rather than having to dip the clutch and steer in the opposite direction on a non ABS model

Only if your pushing it and loose it in the first place Paul, you shouldn't be in a situation where you locking your wheels up in the first place IMO.. There's an art to driving in the snow, low gear, no sharp breaking or acceleration, slow down well before the bend.. My statement was about driving appropriately to the conditions, not trying to regain control once you've lost it, and I reckon I could bring a car to a stop in the snow quicker with a non ABS equipped car.. Few people can actually handle (not just drive..) a car these days in normal conditions, let alone in adverse ones..

Over the last few days I have enjoyed staying in the comfort of my house......food in the cupboards.....oil in the tank......crap to watch on tv and read on here......housework all up to date.....dogs that are happy to go out for an empty in the garden then lie about indoors.........staying out of shops, saving money. All in all, I haven't had to go out, so made the best of staying at home.

Question for you mate, if ABS is all that and is such an aid to the driver, why don't they have it on rally cars and track cars?

 

Not poking my nose into your discussion like but Malt,track cars will often have abs if rules permit it..........f1 cars dont because for spectators its not exciting enough,which tells you everything !!.........Folk who suggest " a good driver " makes for a faster car than modern 4 channel abs systems are normally people who dont like " new modern technology " and think its some kind of badge of honour to race a car without technology.............im not aware of any racing driver who has asked for abs to be removed where rules permit it.....the big firms in far away countries who test their systems on ice etc just sell the software upgrades to the likes of Bmw,Porsche etc they dont belong in race cars as do any of the electronic driver controls like throttle velocity, automatic start clutching and f**k knows what else................the technology is there for cars to race themself,thankfully the rules still demand a driver though

Ok, maybe I was wrong in saying track cars, but I stand my statement about ABS increasing the stopping distance on a good layer of snow, or even something like gravel or sand.. I just checked a few facts and a study online to make sure I had my facts right, and I have! I also read that ABS has only shown to be an advantage in the wet over a non equpped car with a proficient driver, it has no effect in the dry and if all 4 wheels lock up at the same time on ice, little difference there too. I guess ABS is more effective for most drivers who would just hammer on the brakes as hard as they can in a panic if something starts to go wrong, but I still think that if you know how to handle a car properly as opposed to just knowing how to drive one, plain ABS will offer little extra in most road conditions apart from the wet.. ABS coupled with ESP or any other type of stability control/active yaw control might make a difference though!

 

spot on, most dont know how drive in the snow, going feckin 20 mph , they shit scared . i passed loads when driving. i just slow it a bit round bends and use gears then brake, wheres as most as you say hit the brakes and skid . i always put me foot down the 1st few mins just to get used to the conditions, and never had any probs been driving 40 years
