boyo 1,398
imo the councils are worse with all the hi tec gear and road clearing stuff they got than when they used to manually throw it out of the lorries with shovels .road i live on was closed all day yesterday . mind you we get snow up here in the summer or it certainly feels like it some years .lol. stewie 3,387
We used to run along the cut (canal lurcher 1) when it froze. i lived next to a canal and used to do the same!!! in sweden i was working in minus 20 most days and it didnt bother me, but here if it below 0 i hate it......... the swedes are great at driving in the snow, the whole country is prepared weeks in advance...........the main road in and out of stockholm is as busy after a meter of snow as it is in july!!!! you have to have snow tyres and pass a driving test on driving on ice...........also they recycle all the grit each year, which i dont think we do here???? gnasher16 30,396
Question for you mate, if ABS is all that and is such an aid to the driver, why don't they have it on rally cars and track cars? Not poking my nose into your discussion like but Malt, track cars will often have abs if rules permit it..........f1 cars dont because for spectators its not exciting enough, which tells you everything !!.........Folk who suggest " a good driver " makes for a faster car than modern 4 channel abs systems are normally people who dont like " new modern technology " and think its some kind of badge of honour to race a car without technology.............im not aware of any racing driver who has asked for abs to be removed where rules permit it.....the big firms in far away countries who test their systems on ice etc just sell the software upgrades to the likes of Bmw,Porsche etc they dont belong in race cars as do any of the electronic driver controls like throttle velocity, automatic start clutching and f**k knows what else................the technology is there for cars to race themself, thankfully the rules still demand a driver though

I just checked a few facts and a study online to make sure I had my facts right, and I have! I also read that ABS has only shown to be an advantage in the wet over a non equpped car with a proficient driver, it has no effect in the dry and if all 4 wheels lock up at the same time on ice, little difference there too. I guess ABS is more effective for most drivers who would just hammer on the brakes as hard as they can in a panic if something starts to go wrong, but I still think that if you know how to handle a car properly as opposed to just knowing how to drive one, plain ABS will offer little extra in most road conditions apart from the wet.. ABS coupled with ESP or any other type of stability control/active yaw control might make a difference though!
mark a l 27
I can remember reading a book about the winter of 1963 and the RAF had to do food drops in remote areas in the south west
