ABS gives you the ability to steer when the wheels are locked up or sliding in the snow, rather than having to dip the clutch and steer in the opposite direction on a non ABS model

Only if your pushing it and loose it in the first place Paul, you shouldn't be in a situation where you locking your wheels up in the first place IMO.. There's an art to driving in the snow, low gear, no sharp breaking or acceleration, slow down well before the bend.. My statement was about driving appropriately to the conditions, not trying to regain control once you've lost it, and I reckon I could bring a car to a stop in the snow quicker with a non ABS equipped car.. Few people can actually handle (not just drive..) a car these days in normal conditions, let alone in adverse ones..

Think you mean high gear, low revs, stops the wheels spinning.

Not if he was going downhill..... Lol

True but find me a road that you never have to drive uphill on :tongue2:

An example of when it's handy to be a "prepper", not in the doomsday sense, but in the common sense sense of having enough food, fuels, and essential items on hand to last a period of time.

We just don't have great amounts of snow these days so when we do many aren't prepared. The media mae it sound worse than it is, nobody I know gives a feck. Wont stop me going to work tomorrow but I'm sure a couple will blag it.

Using gears to break can be dangerous to I'll add, going from 3rd to 2nd for a bend on friday my front end was skidding, at least with the brakes you can respond quicker imo. It's just a matter of experience. On the plus side, places where you would usually have to do a 3pt turn can just handbrake it in half the space instead, lol.

Last time we got snow 09 or 10, I was straight out in it with the car, ordinary saloon. The amount of people bitching and moaning they couldn't go here, couldn't go there, was unreal. Coming down a decent hill on ice through forestry (shaded all day) with the sheep trailer on (unloaded) was the only "SHIT!" type moment I had, could feel the trailer pushing a bit, which I figured would make the rear end of the car slide, let the car travel faster and all ended well. Was strange driving over 5+ inches of ice, looking at the dotted lines get turned into squiggly lines through all that water. Was fun for a few days but the novelty wore off kinda quick for me.

Na malt the cars back then never had abs power steering etc etc. the roads were not as well built dual and motoways were in there infancy , it the people whinging moaning fookers. The media want fooking as well. In some parts of europe you would get fined for breaking down in the snow or skiding with rhe wrong tyers. This country needs to take a long hard look at its self or at least the shandy drinking south does lol

ABS is fecking shit in the snow anyway, you ideally need the wheels to lock and it compacts the snow in front of the wheels and it builds up a wedge which helps you stop. ABS can actually increase the stopping distance in the snow under normal braking conditions as I found out the first time I ever drove an ABS equipped car in it! It's not so bad on ice and muddy roads, but I'd rather drive a car without it in the snow if I'm honest, and maybe without it full stop..

Just disconnect a sensor then, ABS light on = not gonna work! Mind it will fail it's mot if it's on at test!

I think it's great that people won't drive in an inch of snow, I went to pick up a rifle from Canterbury on Friday, about 90 miles from me.

Normally at 5.30pm on a Friday night, it would have been a nightmare on the M25. Not so last Friday, No snow on the motorway, and no cars either.:-)

Seems everyone had gone home early because the roads were WET.

There and back in 2 and a half hours. Happy days!
