masterhunter 3
I want to get a dog soon (that if my mom will let me ) In your opinion what do you reckon are the best ferreting companions. Dont want a big arguement moaning at eachother just wanna no what your opinion is ?Cheers FM ferretingmoucher, If you want a dog for marking when you are ferretng and a soft mouthed dog for holding rabbiting in the nets, purse or long, get yourself a springer spaniel pup from working strain. If you want a dog that catch's missed rabbits get yourself a 3/4 whippet 1/4 bedligton, preferrably racing whippet or if still possible coursing strain. When your pups grown it want to be about 21" to the shoulder. Quote Link to post

Magpie 102
This is a subject that is very close to my heart. What ever you choose to accompany you on your ferreting trips it will have to have a good concentration level. It's no good having a dog that gets bored and wonders off to do it's own thing so IMO sighthound saturated lurchers are out. You'll need your dog to have a good nose as marking is an essential skill in a ferreting dog. Marking inhabited burys and pinpionting kills bellow ground will save you hours of un-necessary work. Intelligence is key and above your dog must be biddable. The best ferreting dog I've owned was a first cross Beardie collie/ Greyhound that once over her extended puppy hood ( Beardies are notoriously slow to mature) became a fantastic ferreting dog. She would mark earths, lay ups and had an almost telepathic ability when it came to catching boltting bunnies, Oh how I miss her. I've seen one or two Beddlington crosses that were pretty good and some very good lurcher to lurchers but, I'm a big fan of the Beardie x and heres the little lady that will be coming with me this winter... jonathan 0
lol my border collie is a good little ferreting dog he marks well and holds rabbits in the net and he is very stady but he cant catch them if they slip the net or come out of un netted holes but i got two beddyx that do so when i go ferreting a got a little term with me because most of the time its me one border collie the two lurchers jack and jill and the ferrets and net and stuff all 3 dogs get on well Quote Link to post
