RossM 8,119
Each to there own, I know people's circumstances aren't all the same, my old bitch is the same when I leave her but she still gets a spin out and she too carries an injury, they get used to it and as long as they getting out and about daily and the odd night out they are happy, as I said circumstances and all that, but I'd like to think I would be as loyal to MY dogs as they have to me and retire them at MY fire, I know a lot of lads just see the dog as a tool and once it's either broken or worn see it fit for no purpose and discard it like a used porno but I'm not one of them lads. JMHO. Hope the bitch has many a happy warm year to come mate atb 2 Quote Link to post

nothernlite 18,078
8 year is young in my eyes but the dog must of worked some to retire at 8 anyway out with the old and in with the new each to there own Quote Link to post
paulus 26
everyone is different i retired my old bitch a few years ago, to watch her go down hill has ben nothing short of tragic, the old dog here (11) will work untill he can no longer do it. if your sensible with the work they do there is no reason to retire a dog. indeed an old dog in the daytime is far more usefull than a night time speed merchant Quote Link to post
Floyd17586 454
Well done on the decision always a very difficult decision to make.everybody has different circumstances and i think you done right.better retiring her now before she done more damage and end up a proper cripple..and is not as if the old bitch wouldnt be seeing you..atvb floyd Quote Link to post
DEERMAN 1,020
yes think you just need to cut back on work with longer rest days inbetween but still give the older dogs thier fix per week to keep them happy Quote Link to post
day worker 296
yes think you just need to cut back on work with longer rest days inbetween but still give the older dogs thier fix per week to keep them happy mate the injury she sustained 4 years ago was a hairline fracture which put her out of actionfor a year! she now has a weakness in that leg which effects her ability to stop and turn! it's been noticable that the past couple of months have been hard on her causing considerable pain.i wouldnt normally retire a dog so early but i can tell the time is right!i just couldnt leave her at home because it would drive her crazy! where she is now she will be walked daily accross the moors in excess of 7 miles and will be well cared for in a house 100yards from mine! for me the dog and the new owner its perfect! 1 Quote Link to post
