Dogs That Dont Run When See Rabiits

Recommended Posts

its not just a collie thing :hmm: ........i have a collie cross here that runs flat out at what ever quarry i tell it to.....yet i have seen other crosses stand and look and pick there runs

Think it's a dog thing mate, some do some dont. Never had one not chase a hare though. Maybe they know hares don't go down burries, maybe they love them more, maybe dogs are smarter than we give them credit for

i had a lurcher x lurcher, and when he reached about 3yrs old, and when i used to try and get him to run rabbits on a fence line he would stand and growl at them, yet he would approach them on the lamp because he knew they would maybe hit the fence and he had a chance of catchin them, but on all bigger quarry,as you said it could be f****n miles away and he would be off like a rocket....i think this dog also felt the vibe from me....we both thought chasing rabbits was shite at this point in time ;)

Well i wouldnt own a dog that stalked or walked down the beam end of. Not likeing long slip of 30/50yds out in a feild and dog not wanting too run out too them? Whats the point

Dogs should go too the end of the beam when asked no if but's or maybe's.

dogs that run flat oot at squatters usualy learn

mr reddawn i have a little querie here ,............now you say you wont entertain a dog that stalks but here you say DOGS THAT RUN FLAT OOT ON SQUATTERS USUALLY LEARN,.......... this would say to me that you are implying that they slow down on squatters,.................so they are technically stalking............they have learnt that running flat out at squatters dont bag them rabbits .................or they over shoot them................

stalking to me is great as i think its the most natural thing for a predator to do,............its a matter of life or death for alot of animals...............

the stalk is a natural way for them to preserve energy and gives them a better chance..........................at the end of the day i would class a dog that stalks would bag more rabbits than a dog running hell for leather...................using more energy resources .......................

especially on green rabbits that usually sit/squat from not seeing a beam...........

also these steady dogs that do stalk would be alot better over bad terrain such as hills etc.........and when i say stalk im referring to a dog that dont fook about it knows its there and takes precaution in finding and takeing it...................some dogs are great at it and it leaves plenty left in the tank..............

i dont want an argument i just want your opionion on your quote above..........

there is a big diffrence between a dog changing gear for the last couple a yards to a squatter an stalking fella, if you dont see that, i suggest ye get out abit more often

lol.............so does your dog carry on when it cant see it.............no need to get personal me son.............lol

when you got a beam on a squatter alot of the time they cant see the coney ( as im sure your aware as i dont get oot as much as you)......................

now an exspereinced dog will trust you knowing that at the end of your beam is a coney,....................does yours just run over it.......?

now a beam at a distance will not illuminate a small area.........................so steady dog preferred

at the end of the day a good dog = good success rate = good decisions made by your dukel...............and to me stalking is part of it..............what use would a dog be what cant see it and just runs over the top..............

are you mad lol, a dog brought on right will run the beam if there aint no bunnys to be seen(squatting), so to answer your question, then aye, my dogs run the beam an do so a heck of a lot faster than stalking it lol, she very rarely over shoots a squatter an she never stalks..... is that simple enuff for you??

if you are happy with a stalker, then so be it, but dont try an question me, starting with mr reddawn lol, or ll answer how i like, just like you did lol

i am not happy with a stalker, an cos you aint seen a dog pick up squatters whilst running an not stalkin, does not mean it cant happen, ask around, im sure somebody thats been oot way me will tell you..... another thl legend, trys to be dry an witty, trys to make out he dont do a lot when questioned, yet quick enuff to jump on folk an question them.... well let me put it like this mrs whippet99..... anytme ye wanna put ye stalker in same field as my runner, you will bemade more than welcome

can i put my 2bobs worth in please you all or most of you are saying its a collie thing not running at a rabbit that is 40yrds down a hedge side standing only 2ft from going in the hedge. to me its the lads lamping thats are at fault not the dog feck me have any of you got any field craft, your going to sicken any dog no mater what breed slipping it on things it has no chance of getting near never mind getting a bend into. you lamp into the field from the hedge side not walk the field lamping the hedge..

its field craft you going to catch the rabbits not just to look at them..atb

2011_03283day0018_zps9cb25964.jpg

thats no feild craft thats common sense the collie x i had would stand and watch the rabbits run away at 30 yards away was great at the beginning then just made its own mind up monkey was a great ferreting dog and thats what it ended up doing till it passed :thumbs:i know all collie crosses are not the same as the one i had its just put me of them i like a dog to do what its told and be keen  Edited by nothernlite

That's a chalange if I ever did hear one I no mine don't stalk to the rabbit every dog I have had have ran down the beem

but they cant gaff, according to whippet, they either overshoot or stalk, make ye mind up man :D:tongue2:

lol the internet aye................................you havent answered my question ......................a dog doesnt see every squatter ,...............................

what does your dog do when it cant see a squatter...?

does it stop !

does it take a chance!

at distances your dog will not see what you do......................obviously , so dont say it does...................what does it do .........?

were obviously getting the stalking buisness mixed up .........................i dont mean stalk all the way to the beam as surely were on about the dog runs up to the beam and stalks the last bit ..................whever it can see it or not...........

my mutt will get so close with the stalk and then snatch it from its seat....................

seen it when they dont even move ...................easiest catch ever.....seen them when they jump and are caught mid air ................................

there will be better dogs than my mutt ..................as for challenges on the net.......................i got nothing to prove when it comes to dogs ......................im happy knowing fook all and having shite dogs thanks................

please answer my question....!

i think me and you are both mature enough to know that squatters can be picked up on the run ........................

your obviously not going to answer my question.................lol

im no big hunter never will be.....................good luck with your rabbiting ......................in all honestly ive never seen an exspereinced dog try and run what it cant see..........but it knows its there.............i dont say anything unless i can back it up pal..............

i just keep meself to meself thats why my dogs stay where they are .................little people know the better....................i mean no one wants to nick whippets lol

Link to post

come back it up then pal, your full a minyaka, an its plain to see.......

now we are talkin aboot taking them on the run, thoguth we was talkin aboot takin them oot there seat ffs... ohh i forgot it cant be done unless they stalk

i dont claim to be a big hunter, quite the opposite infact, i just enjoy geting out way me dogs, an dont mind taking folks out, when did ye last see my pics of bags an days oot?? hardly big claims is it?? lol

it seems that imnot the only person who owns a dog that can do the impossible according to you, so maybe ill let somebody else try an explain it to you, iv tried an failed, an i offered to show you, but i seen your refusal coming a mile away

for the last time mrs whippet :bye:
