I haven't read all posts. . I realise it's common in collie crosses, however I can verify non collie lurchers doing the same. . My dog now who is deer/grey/whippet won't run all out at a rabbit near a hedge from too far off.

I'd be disappointed at a pup/inexperienced dog not giving it full beans on his quarry at any distance, but come second season, I'd expect to be seeing a little savviness personally.

Bit funny this my dogs have no collie in them but my little bitch has a funny quirk she will go flat out then start too slow down when getting close to a squatter then stalk it about 5 meters and will not strike or run till it moves so she can get a run only time see her stalking but I think it would frustrate me a dog stalking every thing lot of my rabbits tend to get lamp shy and u need a fast and up them type that can get preasure on them too make mistakes cos a lot are not that far away from home here

Me mate got half collie grey bitch lump of a bitch for 22tts she Neva stalked or picked a run. Think few ovas on here seen her run, squatters she does me head in if 10 squat she catch 9 of the seat. We took her to a real testin spot ran her on 29-30 rabs she took 26 of em very good bitch just need the [bANNED TEXT] owners for them

I've seen the bitch you're talking about Paul and you're right she's great on the squatters, she'll stalk my dog while they're being exercised but never stalks a bunny.

I've 2 collie x's here and they never stalk or pick their runs.

same here jonny with Bryn 1 x collie x grey , he never stalked a rabbit in the beam, he runs flat out with the 1st run to the last run, done the same for 5 years  infact this rabbit he ran + caught well over 200yds, me + jim couldnt see if he had caught at 1st, he is more like a bullx when running than colliex. i aways try to make sure when young any lurcher more so lurchers with collie in them ,thay catch whats in front of them, not long silly slips, you can build up to that later.

Spot on Ray, always give a young dog runs that they'll gain confidence with. Some lads just don't have the patience or the bunnies to run to pick the right runs for their dogs.

A dog that can take squatters consistently is a joy to watch-down the side of the beam, snatch it up and back to hand. Priceless and rare......

I had a collie/grey bitch that used to stalk a rabbit that was on the hedgeline. I can honestly say she caught more rabbits by the stalking than running full out from the time I told her to go. She would stalk out of the beam and get as close as possible before lunging forward. It was this lunge that used to unsettle the rabbits and mostly ended up with a catch.

Personally the stalking did not bother me one bit. What did my head in was sometimes usually after 15 or so rabbits she would start running them with her head up, she had no intetion from the start to catch that rabbit. She would turn the rabbit as usual just not strike at it, like she was playing with them, she would do that for 4 or 5 rabbits then revert back to her usual self, one turn and caught. She never did get the hang of squatters always seemed to strike over their heads.
