Wildling 520
I find the best thing to do is copy the advice from a person posting before me and post is as my own :boogy: Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
I'm going to mention something that no one has yet. You own dogs, well, I would take a dog with you and watch him as well as the tree's. Your dog will be able to hear the scrabble of claws against bark and smell the squirrel long before you see him. Once that dog has been out a couple of times the penny will drop and you'll end up with the most valuable piece of squirrel hunting kit known to man. When your dog takes off after the squirrel get ready because more often than not all Mr Treerat will do is come around your side of the tree so the dog can't see him. A good dog will get you more squirrel opportunities than any other single thing........JD 2 Quote Link to post

J Darcy 5,871
Hi, colour won't have a bearing..the squirrel will run up the nearest tree, as the dog runs past the tree the squirrel will skuttle around your side of the trunk away from the dog. Then you tak5e him. i've hunted squirrels this was for the past 25+ years with all colours of dogs..... but, hey that's JMHO...JD Quote Link to post
Acuspell 329
What, a bit like this? Bedlington whippets though....bred them for 30 odd years. The above advice does work...but ii didn't know you had a dog. Just have it under control for what you want to do - mooching they hunt and catch (occaisonally), out with the shotgun, they work cover. Out with the rifle they stalk with me. 2 Quote Link to post

milegajo 595
Ahhhh, squizzers, my favourite adversary.... Experimentation, observation and dumb luck all help. Over time you'll learn where and when to find them, we're entering probably the very best time of year for hitting them too. So much fun it is truly addictive. Take a walk with the rifle where your focus is your senses. Your ears are often your greatest asset against squirrels, they are noisy buggers. Pay close attention to scuffling of leaves as well as their 'chuffing' and 'barking'. If you're still and trying to detect movement, try not to focus your sight too hard on anywhere, let your eyes relax as it is your peripheral vision that is most sensitive to the tell tale shadows and bouncing branches. Above all, get out there as much as you can and soak up all the outdoors has to offer. Heaven on Earth my good man. Edited January 22, 2013 by milegajo Quote Link to post
