Paid 935
on the bright side, i can see local butchers getting a boost as super market meat takes a dive over the next few months :-)
Strong Stuff 2,171
We should all worry about these companies going under, less choice as a consumer can never be a good thing. When our choice becomes limited to the three big supermarkets it will be a sad day. We haven't got less choice though? Lovefilm, Blinkbox, Sky and probably loads of others all compete for the same market, bringing the price down and leaving the expensive one to die, the strong will survive the recession, and with a bit of luck prices for goods might drop a bit too. When Blockbuster came along to a town near you, what happened to the local independant video shop? It's all fair
Strong Stuff 2,171
on the bright side, i can see local butchers getting a boost as super market meat takes a dive over the next few months :-) Deffo!!! Just been to Tesco, loads of reduced price meat, like really cheap, less than half price, just filled 2 drawers in my freezer with lamb and beef for about a tenner, happy days! I did buy myself a couple of fresh burgers while I was there ................... AND THEY'RE OFF!
Nik_B 3,790
comet, blockbuster, jessops are all victims of not keeping up with an ever changing market place, this is totally different to your local high street butcher being priced out of the market place through supermarkets, high rent and buisness rates. these were the big boys and somebody at the top failed to read the market and impliment the required changes to enable there companies to compete, a job that they were well paid to do Totally agree on what you say about Comet and Blockbuster. Regarding the butchers and greengrocers though...I actually think supermarkers are very expensive. We can get much cheaper veg/eggs and milk locally and much better quality meat from the farm shop for the same price if not cheaper. I think the supermarkers prey on people having little time to shop around and ona perception that they are cheaper which isnt the truth.

The Seeker 3,048
We should all worry about these companies going under, less choice as a consumer can never be a good thing. When Blockbuster came along to a town near you, what happened to the local independant video shop? It's all fair Fair point re Blockbusters hitting the local video shop, but recently we've had the American electrical giant Best Buy close it's 50 shops, Comet close their doors so the only electrical stores are the DSG Group (Pc World/Currys). Sure you can buy a TV or HI-FI off the internet as you can most things and I do buy plenty of items BUT would I want to buy a 50" TV over the net? Not really I may save £100 than buying it from a high st shop but can you imagine trying to send it back 8 months later when it goes faulty? Equally I don't wish to see DSG have the monopoly as this isn't good for keeping prices low for consumers. HMV have been struggling for a long time as have Jessops but I would rather them be there than not , the truth is no body can compete against the internet businesses if your trying to run a high st shop you have rent, rates wages, electricity, gas, telephone, PAYE, NI to pay before you even turn a screw. These things are more than likely not the concern of the internet business. Whilst I fully support the initiative and prosperity achieved by the internet businesses I wish it would not be at the expense of the High St, nor do I wish for all our shopping be limited to supermarkets. Wildling 520
To be fair you could see this was coming one day. The markets change and sometimes its for the better, I preferred the old video shops any way as the collections they had were classics.

whippet 99 2,613
only people that are flying are either lucky c**ts or bullshitters Don't believe that for a second, you look at the annual profits of the big companies, energy companies and the people flying up the rich lists... The only ones who are suffering are us mugs at the bottom of the pile.. A certain section of society is doing very well out of this recession... yes the rich are getting richer
