NEWKID 27,159
Well yeaterday couldn't have been much better, after a couple of weeks of scratching about for not a lot and getting soaked as well,it was the perfect day. We had planned another trip with Sean C and the lads, but unfotunately it was put back for a couple of weeks so, Mick suggested a trip to a bit of permission on the edge of Dartmoor. We bumped into the farmer on the way up the lane and he asked us to look at a couple of hedges around a Kale field that was getting battered, We had the normal dogs my 2 plus Micks terrier and lurcher pup ( his big dog stayed home today) we also tok my brothers first xbeddy whip for an outing, and a couple of boxes of ferrets. It was bright sunshine but cold.... perfect..., we got to the field and saw a couple dive in the hedge, we decided to put a couple of stopnets out and a few run nets in the hedge but only a few purse nets would be laid on the holes to give the dogs some runs....... the first corner of the hedge was no more than 50 yards long but no sooner had the ferrets gone in the fun started so hitting the nets the dogs picking a few and a few finding safety in the next door hedge (there for another day).... after an hour or so we had taken 7 from this little bit, great start. we moved round the corner and started on the main hedge same method, we knew we would miss a few but this is local permission, for both lamping and ferreting so you don't want to kill it, and the fun started again rabbits were bolting regular with some great catches... the stand out for me when a rabbit shot out with my white hob attached, he tried to hold on but was kicked off, the rabbit got about 20 yrds and was snatched by my whip x beddy, Everything had gone to plan it was around 2 30 and we had 21 in the bag, but 1 ferret was missing, after a quick search with the locator we found she had gone back into the corner we had started on, Mick picked his up nets and went to start the dig when a rabbit stumbled out of the bank completly beaten and dazed, Mick picked it up where it stood and the ferret followed after.... result With 22 in the bag, the ferrets and dogs had worked really well, I need to get brothers dog out a bit more to steady her up,and my little lurcher was on fine form plus micks pup had a busy day and learnt a bit more.... all in all a great day Cheers Kev Martha doin a bit of jumping Bit more jumping practice for Martha Edited January 14, 2013 by NEWKID 2 Quote Link to post

NEWKID 27,159
Cheers for the replies lads Mick C She's my terrier mate, she's basically a leggy jack russel, got her from a farmer I know in North Devon, from his farm terriers... For ratting, bushing and marking she's real good mate... She's a really keen dog mate she'll be 4 in May and she's getting better with age, still mad but not quite so mad lol.. Cheers Bill, she was top drawer yesterday caught a few bolters, held in the nets and released as soon as I was there, she's just really steady plus her jumping is improving.... I wish I had done more with the ferrets with brothers bitch, she's a bit head strong and acts like a terrier too much... I'll give her a few more trips and see how she settles Cheers Kev Quote Link to post

NEWKID 27,159
Thanks for the replies lads Sirius: Yes mate a few were ( hence not worried about catching all of them), the majority caught were bucks though at least 70% I reckon... Quote Link to post
NEWKID 27,159
Nice dog Thanks Mick, she had to be spayed a few months back, she's had problems when in season for a while ( phantom pregnancies and a real change in shape) the last season was her worst yet, snapping at the lurched and guarding everything she had started to pile on weight too.... When she was spayed the vet said she had the start of an infection to her womb so it was the right decision... Since her shape has started to come back, she's a real busy little dog mate non stop all day, she's a solid marking dog ( a little too enthusiastic maybe lol) but typical terrier when a rabbit hits the net, bloody crocodile jaws lol.... Cheers Kev Quote Link to post
