Coursing deerhounds.

Recommended Posts

Good stamp of deerhound there matie, smallish, strong looking just the type for doing the business...If all deerhounds at the moment were like these, the breed would not have the problems it is having....

Would be interested to know the breeding

Hes taken quiet a few with the D/HXG.H and the D/H bitch has taken a few,but they wouldnt be as good as a lurcher he openly admits. The D/H dog is too large and a little too slow to get on terms with the bunnys,he has taken a good number but its not his forte I'm told.DH the hounds are originally from Bill Doherty,(I think thats his name) My mate is well into the breed and enjoys working them,he always says if you want to catch a lot more game use a lurcher.Another mate of mine keeps lurchers and hints on flat pasture fields and he went to the Deerhounds territory for a weekend of coursing, after the 1st day the lurcher owner had to carry his dog down due to his feet being shredded on the heather and rocks and the D/h's were still going strong,on the return visit and on the flat land the D/H's could only get into contention once the course dragged on but the lurchers had the upper hand there. But he really enjoys the breed and thats what matters I think.

Have had time to study your mates deerhound matie, its not a Doxhope deerhound, but there is definately Doxhope in it..its either stock from David Hearne or Shane Hourihane or possibly Billy Kaveny. There are some smashing working deerhounds in Ireland now, probably more so than over here, the hardest thing is keeping it that way, I hope your mates does well with them

Some new pics of the brother of the deerhound bitch, this dog has some temper and once riled up hes a determined sort.

The dog takes anything asked of him, although he needs a big place to come up on his hares initially,he jumps ditches and fences for fun.

Seen these dogs go. Man was right a good lurcher would blow them out of the water, but graceful big things. We got three hares that day all accounted for by the lurchers. Nice fella, but seemed more interested in breeding programs, and bizarrely for non hunters? Wolfhound x deerhound!Showed us a nice piece of land  big peat bog.
