Makes me laugh when keepers bang on about shooting dogs, unless the dogs actually worrying/attacking livestock then any keeper who shoots a dog deserves shooting themselves.

I'm not gonna go into what I'd do and all that carry on if a keeper shot my dog for what in my eyes would be doing them a favour on the Internet etc but some keepers must have to sleep with one eye open surely!

I'd like to see Country File do a Piece on the RSPCA , and how they Destroy Healthy Dogs !!

Makes me smile how gamekeepers hate lurcherlads , then think its ok to blow a bird of prey to bits , tossers !!!

alot of keepers are useing lurchers its just some of the numptys that spoil for everyone they dont hate all lurcherlads

My point exactly!! And yea like on here some like dogs some like shooting but the wise ones no the two can work together.......... But only if they communicate. MAny a keeper that don't like lurcherlads, will actually let them on at the right time and with permission, but that usually means those that help them out.

We have plenty of lads with lurchers but they won't dare come on without permission because they know the consequences.

Those that we don't know, then they get dealt with accordingly and within the protection of livestock legislation.

got permission on a pheasant shoot dont get on much during the shooting if i do he will tell me where to ferret can lamp no bother not interferring with his birds february got the run of the place keepers brand new even keeps lurcher his self

I have permission on quiet a good estate, the keeper is from a family of keepers and you might say he is " old school"....lol....I don't think he would have a lurcher as a gift and I know for a fact he thinks they are a f*****g nuisance BUT he lets me have a wander on there come the end of the season, comes out with me.

I will beat for him when I can or if he is short......he is a pal, and pals help each other out.......I have seen lads come beating and first day they are in the keepers ear about when they can get on pigeon shooting or whatever it is they want to do

They don't do their seasons graft then wait to get invited, or ask when they have put enough graft in.......

Free rides don't happen nor should they, one estate I go to wont even let me walk my lurcher on the lead but if they needed terriers then they phoned me and I was welcome to shoot pigeons as I wanted out of season.....it's their place and their rules

You see Wilf I agree with you, on this one, it isn't the dog it's the reason for being there.

The keepers around here give permission to the person rather than the animal. That said, they have to know the person to trust them.

Even gamekeepers know there is nothing better than seeing a good dog work, but it cannot compromise their job!!!

Agreed matey, I don't think folk realise what pressure is on the keeper on shoot day, be it a small private syndicate or a big expensive shoot.

For the small bloke, you still want to show your members some shooting and hopefully some decent birds.

For the big shoot, the guns are paying a lot of money and you have to show everything to the best of your ability.....if they have a crap day the boss may feel the need to give them a free day which can run into a nice string of 00000000s

Some days cost what some folk earn in a year, now that's pressure.

We go beating on a spot and the Permission we now have is Priceless . 100s off acres off all Terrain to Exercise running dogs and terriers and some really good rough shooting (though I ain't fused on shooting) Helping the Keeper Out and Gaining his Trust has really paid off for us .

Mmmm your right, where I am the pheasants are an an addition to the farm, and are always second best, the grouse on the moor are where the interest is.

There are still times though the lurchers are essential, but perhaps not in the way they are going to get used all the time for.

Question Wilf , I'm not really into Shooting though I take the Terriers Beating , I think it's £1200 a day to shoot on the shoot I beat on , but if you take a certain amount off Days it works out cheaper , is that the norm or do shoots differ much price wise , thanks .

I couldn't really tell you mate as I don't have enough experience of different places and prices, plus I don't really ask as its of no matter to me.......one place I go, all the guns are arriving in helicopters and ferraris

One gun had a complete set of £900 tweeds, £200 boots and a purdey complete with purdey ammunition that he had bought just for the day!! Told me he hadn't shot in about 10 years.....so that probably tells you all you need to know about what he is paying!!

I have never bought a driven day in my life but on the small private shoots they are paying about £80 to £100 a day which is cheap shooting.

So one will correct me if I am wrong but I think grouse are around 150-200 quid a brace?

Right on the price of grouse. Plus VAT. Pheasants run from £80 ish a day small local to the highest I've seen of £35000. That was a team of 8 with a bag of 400. High pheasant shooting on premium estates runs at around £40 plus vat max per bird
