The basic answer is nowhere that you don't have express permission to shoot, with the exception of a clay pigeon shooting ground. You reaLLY SHOULD HAVE DONE YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE ASKING THIS QUESTION, or you will be ridiculed. You are not ready to begin hunting, by a long chalk, for christ sake get someone who knows what they are about to help in person or ..................... 1 Quote Link to post
halamrose 24
Come on boys, he is asking for help - he has the sense to do that so don't get all high and mighty. Cardon, Cyclonebri1 has a point, you need to find a mentor. Roughly in this order, 1. get some lessons at a clay ground. 2. Legal quarry are listed in the General License 3. Join a shooting organisation like BASC who provide insurance and legal advice 4. Decide what you are hunting for and research how to hunt them accordingly. Hunting is a different skill to shooting - hunting gets you into the position where you take the shot. 5. Think about ethics, if you can't consistently cleanly kill what you shoot at you should improve your skills before further hunting. 6. Get signed permission to shoot from the landowner or tenant 7. Learn your ground and learn from experience 8. Safety isn't about specific things you do with your gun, it's about everything you do with your gun. 8a always treat a gun as though it's loaded, every time you handle the gun check it's not loaded. 8b never point the gun at anything you are not happy to destroy 8c Keep your finger off the trigger till your ready to fire 8d Be sure your target is what you think it is and that there is plenty of safe space for your shot to fall. Somewhere along the line you will want to buy a gun. Wait at least till you have had your first lesson and understand your eye dominance and gun fit needs. My first shotty cost £50 from a dealer but needed some work to get it ship shape. You can spend a lot more and still hit a lot less, people love posh kit but hunting guns get rough treatment sometimes so go for something you wont mind getting a bit scuffed. An over under is a great place to start, they are simple to use and clean and a broken gun is obviously safe to anyone who sees you so keep the gun broken until your ready to shoot. Bottom line, your not ready to go hunting till you can shoot competently by which time you will have learnt a lot more. Good luck, hunting is a great interest which resonates with deep instincts and so is greatly satisfying, No one can hunt for you and likewise first you must hunt for a lot more knowledge or you will not be fit for the responsibility you are taking on. You have to do that hunting yourself then you can ask the forum better targeted questions. Edited January 14, 2013 by halamrose 1 Quote Link to post
steve_7 10
nice reply Halamrose one thing i would as someone who is pretty new to the shotgun scene, once you have permission to shoot on, spend a day walking round and learning the lay of the land, you will soon where you can shoot and make a mental note of where shot will land. choice and guage is a good one, for me with a knackered shoulder, 3 anchors holding muscles together i chose to start of with a 20bore as after having a go with my mentors shotguns the 12 bore even in semi auto was to much for my shoulder to enjoy using. Hushpowers are nice and quiet, no ear defenders needed etc, but getting used to aim is a tad tricky. semi auto great for roosting and in hide over and under as already said would be a good starting point, thats my next one on the list read as much info as you can get,ask as much is needed, once you get a gun dry mount in front of mirror even 5 minutes a day just to get the feel, im sure others will be along to help out more... good luck Quote Link to post

halamrose 24
I thought you don't need a reason to get a shotgun and that you only need a reason for firearms? Quote Link to post
air gun ant 1,666
Where abouts are you bud? There might someone on here close to you that could give you some experience to get you started and show you the SAFETY side of things because that is you NEED to learn before anything else the rest will come with experience. tegater 789
I thought you don't need a reason to get a shotgun and that you only need a reason for firearms? You should still be asked why you want one though otherwise people could get one for literally any reason. I.e shooting the neighbours cat because it shat in your garden. The op probably did have good reason it just hasn't come across that way, as most people somehow find out a little about a subject before bying all the kit. I don't think any harm is meant. cyclonebri1 8
No harm was meant but I couldn't think of anyway to get the message across any clearer, it is a major concern that you or me could bump into someone like the OP. I'm sure the FEO would have asked the question in some form, if he didn't, well????? I know someone who said "home defence" when asked, been watching to much american tv I guess, he didn't get it granted. Cordon, think about this, these are as acurately as I remember them the words of my 1st FEOfrom over 40 years ago, they stuck with me; "Right you can have your licence, there aren't many rules to abide by, so take care, because if you **** up, (and he said that), we will be down on you like a ton of bricks" 40 years later no **** up's it was good advice Get help in person, a mentor as mentioned above Quote Link to post
