cocker problem

Dont just use him on a shooting day but get him sorted by training every day. Sit and stay is easy starting in the house at feeding time get him to wait while you put his food down. Get him to sit and stay at the garden gate and at field/park gates. Retrieving, get him to sit and stay while you pick up the retrieve.

3 minutes is all a spaniel needs to pick up bad habits never mind 3 years. But a gentle consistent approach will sort it out.

Try using treats when training, you need to teach the dog sitting when you want is rewarding

Treats are a big no in the working training world, im sure someone will come along and say ive done it and it works.

Think of yourself as a child your mum says come here and you get a sweet, you do it all the time just for the sweet. then your mum says come here and someone else says come here ive got a nice rabbit you can hold (or chase/smell) you know what you will get if you go to mum but the rabbit is so much better so thats your choice, you can get a sweet at any time. dogs do because they are taught that is what you will do if I tell you cause you want to please me. its called bonding, training and patience. no there maybe a time when a treat for doing something special is a possibility but I cant think of it. look at dogs that do agility they do the running around and follow the hand as there is something nice in there, I used to show foxhounds and to make them look alert a piece of liver in my hand worked a treat, bring the rabbit back and I will give you a treat, i dont think so

start at the begining no matter how old, every dog will sit you just have to make him do it when you tell him, on a lead make him sit to command walk down the street on a lead, every time you stop say sit, and or pip the whistle. every road crossing stop make him sit then cross, for no reason stop make him sit, he will soon learn every time you stop he sits. so you may have to put your hand down, you may have to lift his head or push his bum gently, its not an issue he will soon learn. But keep at it in differant places every time, who said to me recently its better to drive 4 hours to a piece of fresh ground and do 10 mins training, than do 4 hours of training 10 mins away.

The problem you have is the word cocker, they are a bit more intelligent and that brings stubborness than other spaniels so its not a question of him doing what he is told, he knows he doesnt have to cause you have let him, or someone has, . if i put on the walking jacket my dogs go mad jumping etc, ive taught them as I open the door they sit, no sit no open, they learn and sit now, they jump then sit but its the sit that I want before I open the door, their treat is a walk, in dummy training, the treat is the dummy.

Fay,

From the vein of your topic i gather you do not require the dog to sit on flush,so the problem of sitting and staying i presume is when the dog is at heel.

Follow the very informative threads put forward by Stroller and Philluk and you should see an improvement.

I`m not a treat trainer myself for the simple reason that i would not want to increase the chances of a dog making a noise to prompt the reward when a task has been achieved.
