arcticgun 4,548
fantastic was to hunt rabbits mate with more poeple did it as they dont know what there missing ,people always start out with a harris ,why on earth do they not learn proper and get a faclon and hunt rabbit that way miles miles more fun and sport A lot of lads in game said I was mad and it was a overmatch etc etc at worst I needed a falcon for the size and power of the quarry, and to be honest it ain't pretty on the field at times especially with the hares, but the dog helps subdue quarry as do I when I catch up to the chase lol, we loose far more than we catch, seen dozens of pairs of clean heels this year lol much to the dogs disgust, but once in a while it goes right and ya see a chase that makes ya eyes pop out, dog and bird working together, pure magic and once in a blue moon the result is there to be enjoyed .Most days chaos, frustration and failure await lol, It been a short season on the browns due to them gearing up bigstyle and it became an over match for the bird but he only young and in first season so I did not want to sicken him. A by product of lure carcass training on local fields was that when put up and circling for lure exercise he would occaisionaly disappear to chase rabbits a couple fo fields over and eventually caught the odd one lol so eventually I took him bushing either flying off the glove or putting him up to circle and follow me on, sometimes he like a harris in following behaviour lol sometimes sucessfull sometimes frustrating, but the results slowly followed again. He has been a breath of fresh air the tiecel has, he even been left up to gain height and circle and started to show serious intent on flushed game birds , also done a bit of direct pursuit on corvids with limited sucess, but again great fun, so he sort of a jack of all trades , but deffo master of none lol but again he young and Im inexpirienced and just learning along with him, he got more potential than I have Id say lol the seasons tally has been ok the sport exceptional at times, he a game little fecker , the only cost has been a shorter season due to excessive feather damage, but at least he been out and had some fun ........................... great birds and can adapt to different hunting styles to the classic falconry routes of pursuit or gamehawking on classic quarry types I also agree with you Grovesy on the fact lads should fly what they want instead of starting on a harris etc, put the time into learning and you will knwo what you want to fly,it maybe a compromise on classic falconry but hey its 100% better than the poor feckers ending up in a breeding pen for life used to line somones pockets..... grovsey 74
a way of getting some more kills maybe getting up first light and catching the bunnys in the middle of the field and fly him out the hood .this was you can place you self in the right area and hope the bunnys bolt away from you and then the chase is on , if you got alot of feather damage you could always imp the bird to keep it going Quote Link to post
