sussex 5,777
At last some good stalking weather, was up ,coffee made & out by 6.30 for a short trip to my stalking ground, about 600acres of wood & grassland, Sat & had a coffee as i waited for the first signs of light. With a slight north easterly i had the chance to stalk Round field, a favorite for the deer but very difficult to get any where near if the prevailing south westerly is blowing, today was perfect with a slight north easterly breeze if the deer were not tucked in tight to the wood all should be good. As i worked my way through the wood i could see the deer out about 90 m ,working my way to the edge i lay down opened the bipod &waited, the deer were virtually in a line grazing away from me,&waited & bloody waited, with the wet ground trying to work its way through my clothes & having quite some success, and then an old doe gave me just enough view ,she dropped, the others bolted ,did almost a complete cicuit of the field before stopping in a tight bunch metres from where they started watching the old doe go through the last twitches..Another doe did that funny little stamp of the feet stepping clearof the bunch by a couple of metres, she dropped. The rest were gone this time for good.Went over, checked, bled, back to get quad & collect, gralloch done, back to yard readied &washed out.Back out.! Drove round to back valley, a series of steps up from a small stream covered with a lot of birch scrubb & tussock grass.the good thing is you can come in from the top & spy down & along .Spotting deer is easy getting a clear shot is a different job compleatly. As i made my way slowly along the ridge my intended target grazed 120m away, sitting down leaning against a tree & bipod fully open i waited my chance ,a buck fawn was the first to come clear followed shortly by two mature does, one jumped & ran 30m before crashing down as the 6.5 hit home.I sat & watched for several minutes ready should it need another round. It did,nt. As i started down to check every thing was as it should be another small group , totally un fazed by the shot started to filter out from the scrub led by a cracking pricket ,two 10 inch spikes & good body weight i sat again & waited some more, as he stood 20 m clear of the cover i dropped another doe from behind him. job done. checked both, bled the last doe, back for quad ,gralloch, arseout, washed, loaded in van .home ,final clean tag, chiller.1.45pm done.... When i learn how i,l put pic,s up......!!!!! Quote Link to post
