Guard dogs

Recommended Posts

I take it you want it to just guard your place not be a trained attack dog just look mean enough to put of intruders if that's the case a Rottweiler or a Doberman a mallanoi might be a better attack dog but don't look much in ya yard

I beg to differ......a Mali looks like a great deterent on a chain.......come look at my Mali bitch....if she's penned up in the van I rocks from side to side when she's kickin off....I'll never ever have another Mali though they are such hard work and not relaxing to own but runs the lamp and is as quick as my mates bull x getting to her quarry.....shepherds go off there legs..its horses for coarses just like with lurchers....I like most breed of dogs...

Do you train hounds for man work mate?..........do you think it's a fashion thing?, did folk simply move on to more fashionable breeds or ( if you have experience in man work dogs) were they never that good for man work ?

As you know, Dobermans are a young mongrel breed but had to get bred back a bit in the early days as they were too aggressive and not much use?

Everyone likes their own dogs and I liked mine but I admit I saw some shocking examples.....especially Black and Tans, I kept liver and tan and most of the liver ones I saw were better physical examples of the breed IMHO

He's K.C. Wxm but not show quality. My neighbour has 5 kids under 10 and they can all walk into our house and get a friendly slobber. Any adult male who hesitates at my gate or steps foot in my driveway however, is met with a bear like roar. That does for me, as It's I who am responsible for the safety of all indoors and not the dog. If I wanted an attack dog I'd have a working Mal but old Sabre is so much easier to live with and such a pleasure to have around.

Hi. Yes I train dogs for man work..all as we look for is that dogs are true to there breed type and have the ability to act as they were intended..sadly the kc and show brigade have ruined just about every breed there is.....I don't train or produce nasty dogs they are stable strong dogs that are well socialised and trust worthy...the bite is a trained response to a command the same as sit down stay...there's a misguided belief that if a dog is a German or dutch import that that line is going to be good....this is sadly not the case they don't export there decent lines we get the adverage lines at best...I have a cane corso bitch that has all the so called best breeding and she's the daftest animal on the planet with no drive what so ever...a fashionable breed at the moment...

Perhaps ppd is a better label..this type of dog has a value in excess of 6k this reflects the 18 months of training and the nature of the breed...

Thanks for the reply matey, after reading this thread I had a look at a couple of Doberman breeders sites and I must admit the animals on there look to be hideous physical examples compared to the dogs I kept over 20 years ago.

Slope back, barrel chested frankenstiens, not the nice level hounds I remember.......oh and apparently they are not called " Tan" any more, they are now " sand" !!!!!

I suppose that's another breed f****d.......damn shame

but dont come down to looks i suppose :D

dont have to with 1 of them, not (natural) guards , like Mals,GSD,Rotties. But if they do guard they would do more damage, they dont switch off once they wound up  been round bull breeds since i was a kid, wouldnt be my choise of a guard dog, rather have a well bred GSD.
